where high carbon content and high biodiversity overlap, illustrating that
reducing emissions from deforestation can combat climate change and

3 December 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has recently published material regarding the relevance of its Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) gap analysis, which guides parties in identifying gaps in protected areas systems and in participation of indigenous and local communities, in relation to reducing emissions for deforestation and forest degradation (REDD).

1 December 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a notification indicating that, on 25 November 2008, the Technical Project Manager of the state of Paraná, Brazil, Sergio Mudrovitsch de Bittencourt, and the head of the state's forestry department, Paulo Caçola, officially delivered a report on the carbon offset programme for the operations of the Secretariat of the CBD from the ninth to tenth meetings of its Conference of the Parties (COP), as defined in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the CBD Executive Secretary, Ahmed Djoghlaf, and the Governor of Paraná, Roberto Requião.
1 December 2008: A capacity development workshop for the Pacific region on national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs), mainstreaming of biodiversity and the integration of climate change will be held from 2-6 February 2009, in Nadi, Fiji.
28 November 2008: The first meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), including experts from 14 different countries, convened from 17-21 November 2008, in London, UK. The discussions focused on two main themes: the impacts of climate change on biodiversity; and biodiversity and climate change mitigation.
26 November 2008: Speaking at the International Conference on Biofuels, which took place in São Paulo, Brazil, from 17-21 November 2008, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Deputy Director-General Marcio Barbosa indicated the Organization's readiness to facilitate dialogue among governments on biofuel technology.
20 November 2008: Organized by Tebtebba (Indigenous Peoples' International Centre for Policy Research and Education), the UN University (UNU) Institute of Advanced Studies Traditional Knowledge Initiative, the UN REDD Programme and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat, the Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) was held from 12-14 November 2008, in Baguio City, the Philippines. Participants adopted a global indigenous peoples strategy on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
17 November 2008: Addressing the first meeting of the Ad Hoc
Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change of the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is meeting from 17-21 November
2008, in London, UK, CBD Executive Secretary Ahmed Djoghlaf recalled that the
Group's objective is to provide biodiversity-relevant information to the UNFCCC
through the provision of scientific and technical advice and assessment on the
integration of the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity into
climate change mitigation and adaptation activities.
