17 February 2009: In an op-ed published in the Financial Times, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former US Vice-President Al Gore call for using the economic stimulus that is needed to tackle the global economic crisis to launch a new green global economy.
13 February 2009: “On the Frontlines of Climate Change,” an internet forum launched by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, has published a lead article on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD).
9 February 2009: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is organizing a capacity-building workshop for the Pacific region for implementation of the programme of work on protected areas, from 9-12 February 2009, in Nadi, Fiji. The workshop is scheduled to consider: the inclusion of climate change considerations in the ecological gap-analysis of protected areas; and coordination of technical and financial support to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
2 February 2009: On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, celebrated on 2 February 2009, the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Ahmed Djoghlaf, delivered a message stressing the need for integrated management of land and water.
29 January 2009: Joachim von Braun, Director of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a center of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), received the Bertebos Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry for his work in development economics and as the head of several development research institutions focusing on food, agriculture and rural poverty.
January 2009: The Capacity Development for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (CD REDD) programme, will feature two technical workshops in the upcoming months to enhance the development of national greenhouse gas inventories and forest monitoring systems.
21 January 2009: In preparation for the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on biodiversity and climate change, to be held from 18-22 April 2009, in Helsinki, Finland, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited organizations actively participating in issues related to biodiversity and climate change to submit nominations of experts no later than 20 February 2009.

9 January 2009: The 34th Council of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which took place from 11-13 November 2008, approved $201.17 million for funding 37 new GEF projects, eight in climate change, one in land degradation, and eight multifocal proposals.
15 January 2009: Three projects aimed at countering the gorilla's slide towards extinction were spotlighted as the international Year of the Gorilla (YoG) 2009 got underway with a “Gorillas on Thin Ice” event. The projects, which were drawn up by the UN Environment Programme Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (UNEP/CMS), seek to boost the prospects for the Cross River Gorilla, which is Africa's rarest ape.
