Event: E-Courses in International Environmental Law [viewed]

The International Law Programme of the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has opened a new series of its e-Courses on International Environmental Law, scheduled from 7 February-3 April 2011. The aim of the e-courses is to provide a broad introduction to the main topics under international environmental law, including its fundamental principles, law-making processes, main actors, implementation and compliance procedures, and negotiations of Multilateral Environmental Agreements based on the current legal challenges in international environmental law. The series comprises four e-courses as follows: International Environmental Law (7-20 February); International Environmental Governance (21 February-6 March); Techniques and Procedures in International Environmental Law (7-20 March); and International Environmental Negotiations (21 March-3 April).

ASEAN Focuses on Socioeconomic Aspects of Sustainable Forest Management

Sustainable Development Leads UN Secretary-General's 2011 Priorities [viewed]

EEA Publishes Report on Natural Hazards and Technological Accidents in Europe [viewed]

12 January 2011: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a report titled "Mapping the impacts of natural hazards and technological accidents in Europe," which analyzes impacts of three types of hazards: hydrometeorological or weather related, such as storms, extreme temperature events, forest fires, droughts and floods; geophysical, including snow avalanches, landslides, earthquakes and volcanoes; and technological, such as oil spills, industrial accidents and toxic spills from mining activities.

Event: Fifth Latin American Forestry Congress (CONFLAT V) [viewed]

The fifth Latin American Forestry Congress, co-sponsored by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), Peru's La Molina National Agrarian University and Peru's National Forestry Chamber, will discuss: forests and climate change; degraded areas and reforestation; forest governance in Latin America; advances in forestry zoning in tropical forests; and the international market, value-added and environmental services of forests.
