CIFOR Announces Piloting of New REDD+ Safeguards System in Indonesia [viewed]

14 September 2012: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has reported that the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan will start piloting a new safeguard information system (SIS) for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+) in December 2012.

Event: WTO Public Forum 2012 [viewed]

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum 2012 will focus on the question: “Is multilateralism in crisis?” and will provide an opportunity for civil society participants to analyze the state of multilateralism and assess whether it is in crisis, considering both the Doha Round deadlock and WTO activities that work well. The Forum will address the following: formulating new approaches to multilateral trade opening in areas such as trade facilitation; addressing 21st-century issues and identifying areas in need of new regulations; and looking at the role of non-state actors in strengthening the multilateral trading system.

Event: UNCCD CRIC 11 [viewed]

The eleventh session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 11) is scheduled to convene from 15-19 April 2013. Regional meetings preparatory to CRIC 11 are expected to convene prior to the event. The third Special Session of the Committee of Science and Technology (CST S-3) and the 2nd UNCCD Scientific Conference will convene immediately before CRIC 11, also in Bonn, Germany.

Event: International Banana Symposium [viewed]

Scientific experts, researchers, government agencies and private industries working on banana issues will gather for an international banana symposium co-organized by the Taiwan Banana Research Institute (TBRI), Council of Agriculture (COA) of Taiwan, Bioversity International and the Banana Asia Pacific Network (BAPNET). The symposium's theme will be “Banana health management, use diversification and adaptation to climate change.” Bioversity International is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Abstracts should be submitted by 30 September 2012.

World Bank Supports Forest Fire Response Project in the Russian Federation [viewed]

FAO's Russian Forest Sector Outlook Study Calls for Significant Investment and Reform [viewed]

FAO25 September 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Government of the Russian Federation have released "The Russian Forest Sector Outlook Study to 2030," which covers the 20% of the world's forests located in the Russian Federation, projecting increased forest product production under all scenarios. However, in order to maximize sustainable forest management benefits, the report calls for significant investment, reform and protection.
