Event: UNCCD Technical Workshop on Impact Indicator Refinement [viewed]

The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat, under the guidance of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST) Bureau, is currently undertaking a scientific peer review of the relevance, accuracy and cost-effectiveness of the impact indicators identified at the ninth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 9). It is in this context that this technical workshop will be convened. The workshop will target scientists, experts, managers and practitioners that have experience in the development and implementation of impact indicators, particularly for monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation. Meeting participants are expected to contribute to the refinement of the UNCCD set of impact indicators provisionally accepted at COP 9 and, ultimately, to the establishment of a scientifically rigorous and credible assessment of the impact of desertification and land degradation at the national, regional and global levels.

FAO Releases Survey on National Actions to Safeguard Animal Genetic Diversity [viewed]

24 November 2010: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) released the Results of Informal Surveys on Progress in Country Implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, which describes steps by an increasing number of countries to better manage genetic diversity of livestock, which notes that ten countries have begun implementing national strategies and 28 more are in the process of developing one.

23 November 2010: The 2010 Pacific Plan Annual Progress Report was released on 23 November 2010, by the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretariat, to provide an overview of work undertaken from May 2009 to mid 2010 by Forum Island member countries and the Council of Regional Organizations in the Pacific (CROP) agencies to implement the Pacific Plan priorities endorsed in 2009.

5 November 2010: The Ministerial Committee for the Defense of Nature of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas – Treaty of Commerce of the People (ALBA-TCP) adopted a declaration opposing the concept of "green economy," in which nature is seen as "capital" for producing tradable goods and services.

Event: Joint Expert Meeting of IPCC WGII and WGIII on Economic Analysis, Costing Methods and Ethics [viewed]

This expert meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will address topics such as: identification and comparison of metrics; measuring risk and valuing information; technical change; adaptation as an economic process; integrated assessment; behavioral dimensions; intra- and intergenerational justice and costs; economic and ethical implications of decision making under uncertainty; social cost-benefit analysis; and optimal carbon prices in second-best settings.

Event: Joint IPCC Expert Meeting of WGI, WGII and WGIII on Geoengineering [viewed]

The IPCC will address the physical science basis of geoengineering in several chapters of the WGI contribution to AR5. WGII will address the impacts of geoengineering proposals on human and natural systems, and WGIII needs to take into account the possible impacts and side effects and their implications for mitigation cost to define the role of geoengineering within the portfolio of response options to anthropogenic climate change, including an evaluation of options for appropriate governance mechanisms.
