Event: World Soil Day [viewed]

At its 144th meeting, held from 11-15 June 2012, the FAO Council adopted a decision requesting the wider UN System to recognize 5 December as World Soil Day and to institutionalize its observance. To recognize the Day, an event focused on "Securing healthy soils for a food secure world: A day dedicated to soils" will be organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the framework of the Global Soil Partnership, to raise awareness on the importance of soils in achieving food security, as well as their pivotal role for providing a range of ecosystem services. World Soil Day was first proposed by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2002.

SPREP Releases Pacific Environment and Climate Change Outlook for 2012 [viewed]

SPREP30 November 2012: A new report by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) demonstrates increasing environmental and economic pressures on Pacific islands due to climate change, which it projects to possibly cost low-lying islands as much as 18% of their GDP.

Event: Fourteenth Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF-14) [viewed]

This meeting is being organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in conjunction with its twenty-seventh session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC27/GMEF) to be held from 18-22 February 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya. The objective of the Forum is to facilitate preparations of major groups and stakeholders towards the GC27/GMEF, which will hold ministerial-level consultations on emerging policy issues under the following themes: Implementing Rio+20: A strengthened environmental pillar of sustainable development; and Implementing a green economy as an important tool for achieving sustainable development.

Event: International Seminar: Watershed Management and Climate Change [viewed]

The governments of the Colombian municipality of Neiva and Department of Huila, with support from Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (RLC) of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will discuss watershed management in the face of climate change. The seminar will examine integrated watershed management as an approach to conserve water, soil and biodiversity resources, while supporting and improving local livelihoods and promoting sustainable development at the basin and national levels. The seminar specifically will discuss: public policies; financial tools, including payment for environmental services; techniques, bioengineering approaches and traditional knowledge regarding water stewardship, soil conservation and erosion control; and successful case studies from Colombia and the rest of Latin America.
