CBD Secretariat Prepares for LAC REDD+ Workshop [viewed]

3 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated the list of sponsored experts for the Latin American and Caribbean Regional Consultation and Capacity Building Workshop on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation  in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks), to be held from 5-8 July 2011, in Quito, Ecuador.

EU/AU Commissions Discuss Climate, Biodiversity and UNCSD [viewed]

1 June 2011: The fifth College-to-College meeting of the European Commission and the African Union (AU) Commission was held on 31 May-1 June 2011, in Brussels, Belgium, to develop shared policy agendas. During the meeting, participants discussed ways to enhance cooperation both on short-term challenges and on the long-term structural changes, such as green growth, climate change and biodiversity.

FAO/ITTO Report: Deforestation Rates in Rainforest Basins "Alarming" [viewed]

1 June 2011: A report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) indicates that deforestation rates continue to be "alarming" in most of the 30 countries in the Amazon, Congo and Southeast Asian rainforest basins.

CBD Publishes Technical Study on REDD and Biodiversity [viewed]

1 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released a study that provides scientific and technical information on ways to ensure that the design and implementation of policies for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation  in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks) support the objectives of the CBD.

Programme Document for ITTO/CBD Collaborative Initiative for Tropical Forest Biodiversity Released [viewed]

31 May 2011: The Programme Document for the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Collaborative Initiative for Tropical Forest Biodiversity is now available on the ITTO website. The document provides guidance for possible activities under the Initiative and ITTO members are invited to consider and approve the document, and convey their response to the ITTO Secretariat by 31 August 2011.

Event: For Life, for the Future: Biosphere Reserves and Climate Change [viewed]

This conference is held on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme. It is organized by UNESCO-MAB, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and the German Commission for UNESCO. The conference will bring together high-level political and scientific representatives, both from climate and nature conservation politics, from administration, science and practice from all over the world, including several ministers. The conference will demonstrate how more than 560 UNESCO biosphere reserves in over 100 countries, beyond conserving biodiversity, can contribute to effective climate change mitigation and adaptation. UNESCO biosphere reserves as model regions for sustainable development make available extensive experiences, for example on sustainable land use, green economies, conservation of ecosystem-services, as well as research and education.

EU-Japan Summit Focuses on Climate Change, Green Growth and Energy [viewed]

28 May 2011: President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, and Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan reaffirmed the close partnership between the EU and Japan and discussed climate change, green growth and energy at the 20th EU-Japan Summit.
