March 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated a report on the global celebrations of the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) that took place in the month of February, including events that underscored the linkages between biodiversity and climate change.
Organized under the framework of the International Year of Biodiversity and by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), IUCN and others, this conference aims to review the status and way forward for the conservation, management and financing of biodiversity in transboundary tropical forests. Its results and recommendations will be submitted to the tenth session of the CBD's Conference of the Parties (COP 10), to be held in Nagoya, Japan, in October 2010.
4 March 2010: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) International Technical Conference on Agricultural Biotechnologies in Developing Countries took place in Guadalajara, Mexico, from 1-4 March 2010, and was co-sponsored by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the Government of Mexico and a number of other international partners.
3 March 2010: The World Bank has presented Africa's first large-scale forestry project to be registered under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The announcement was made on the margins on the annual Africa Carbon Forum, which is taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 3-5 March 2010.
3 March 2010: The African Union Commission (AUC) commemorated Africa Environment Day under the theme “African Resilience to Climate Change: Biodiversity Conservation and Enhancing Traditional Knowledge,” in celebrations hosted by the Government of Tanzania.
World Day to Combat Desertification is observed every year on 17 June. The UNCCD Secretariat has selected the following theme for the 2010 Day: "Enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere." This theme was selected to emphasize the relationship between soil and biodiversity during International Year of Biodiversity.
2 March 2010: The World Bank has launched a book titled "Convenient Solutions to an Inconvenient Truth: Ecosystem-based Approaches to Climate Change," which features examples of World Bank projects applying ecosystem-based approaches.
17 February 2010: The International Conference on Biodiversity in Relation to Food and Human Security in a Warming Planet convened in Chennai, India, from 15-17 February 2010, with support from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and a number of other intergovernmental organizations.
1 March 2010: The UN-REDD Programme has published its sixth monthly Newsletter, outlining the Programme's recent activities. Highlights in this issue include: eight new countries joining the Programme; a look ahead to the fourth policy board meeting, which will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 17-19 March 2010; a commentary on the International Year of Biodiversity; and articles on monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV).
1 March 2010: The European Commission has published a Green Paper setting out options for an EU approach to the protection of forests in the context of addressing climate change. The Paper was prepared to provide the basis for a public consultation on whether additional action is needed at the EU level.
