IFAD Recommends Global Response to Food Security [viewed]

IFAD18 August 2014: In advance of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has released an infographic, titled ‘Investing in Small Island Developing States,' and a publication, titled ‘IFAD's Approach in SIDS: A global response to island voices for food security.' These resources highlight SIDS' characteristics, show IFAD's strategic approaches to SIDS engagement, and propose moving towards “a global response to island voices for food security.”

UNEP and Norway Sign Agreement on GRID-Arendal's 25th Anniversary [viewed]

UNEP GRID Arendal14 August 2014: On the occasion of GRID-Arendal's 25th anniversary, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director, Achim Steiner, and Olav Orheim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GRID-Arendal, signed a Programme Cooperation Agreement in which Norway renewed its contribution to UNEP's Programme of Work for 2014. The Agreement includes a commitment of US$16 million to UNEP, including US$1 million to support action on marine plastic debris and microplastics and US$500,000 to improve fish food security in West Africa.

SPREP Launches Climate Change Toolkit for Pacific Media [viewed]

SPREP5 August 2014: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has launched a toolkit to support journalists in the Pacific region in effectively communicating on climate change and related environmental issues. The toolkit consists of a series of factsheets containing information on different aspects of climate change, and a manual of activities for improving journalists' climate change reporting and interview techniques.

UNEP Foresight Report Identifies Emerging Issues for SIDS [viewed]

UNEPJune 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has published a report on priority issues for small island developing States (SIDS). ‘Emerging Issues for Small Island Developing States: Results of the UNEP Foresight Process' is one of UNEP's contributions to the Third International SIDS Conference convening in Apia, Samoa, in September 2014, and it is aligned with one of the thematic issues of the Conference: “identify new and emerging challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of SIDS and ways and means to address them.”

Event: First Africa Regional Mountain Meeting (AMRF) [viewed]

The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the Africa Mountain Partnership Champions Committee in partnership with the East African Community (EAC), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) are organizing the 1st African Mountains Regional Forum (AMRF), under the theme 'Towards a Shared Mountain Agenda for Africa'. The three-day forum will aim to: support understanding of common conservation and development issues in the region; identify strategic actions to address major emerging issues; promote linkages and collaboration between different stakeholders for a regional framework on sustainable mountain development in Africa; and share lessons learned and experiences in meeting the conservation and development challenges including water, energy, food security and climate change in African Mountain regions.

WorldFish Report Discusses Fisheries, Food Security and Climate Change in Kiribati [viewed]

WorldFishAugust 2014: WorldFish has released a report that examines fisheries governance and livelihoods in Kiribati. The report, titled ‘Fish for the Future: Fisheries development and food security for Kiribati in an era of global climate change,' analyzes the status of Kiribati coastal and ocean fisheries resources and discusses challenges related to sustainability and climate change; population, food security and coastal fisheries management; social challenges in Kiribati fisheries; and licensing revenue and development.

Report Finds 'Coasts at Risk' in SIDS, Tropical States [viewed]

coastsatriskAugust 2014: Tropical and small island developing States (SIDS) are most at risk from exposure and vulnerability to coastal hazards, according to ‘Coasts at Risk: An Assessment of Coastal Risks and the Role of Environmental Solutions.' The report uses an indicator-based approach to assess risks from exposure and vulnerability to coastal hazards and identifies where environmental degradation increases these risks. The report then considers how environmental solutions, such as conservation and restoration, can contribute to risk reduction and conservation goals.

Event: Fourth High-Level Round Table on the ITPGR [viewed]

Titled 'The International Treaty, Climate Change and Food Security,' the Fourth High-Level Round Table on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) will take place on the occasion of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary General's Climate Change Summit. It aims to facilitate high-level discussion of how monetary and non-monetary benefits generated from the utilization of plant germplasm under the Treaty can support agricultural innovation for breeding climate-smart seeds; discuss how to address climate change impacts on food crops through Treaty systems; and showcase the value of the Treaty's Benefit-sharing Fund and its projects for climate adaptation of food crops.

July 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

World Bank-AfDB-ADB-IDB-EBRD-GEFJuly 2014: The World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) undertook a variety of activities during July. Projects were approved across Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe, addressing issues such as transboundary water management, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, hydropower and climate resilience.
