Event: Workshop on IWRM as a Tool for Adaptation to Climate Change [viewed]

This three-day workshop on Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) as an adaptation tool to climate change will gather professionals of UN-Water members and partners, and is organized by the UN-Water Thematic Priority Area on Water and Climate Change and the Cap-Net network. The workshop is specifically targeted for professionals that are not experts on water or adaptation to climate change issues, and that need to increase their knowledge on the subject.

Report by UNESCO and Partners Reviews Challenges in Managing Iraq's Marshlands [viewed]

CIFOR Blog Questions Effectiveness of Protected Areas [viewed]

24 August 2011: POLEX, a publication on forest policy of the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), highlights the results of a recent study on the effectiveness of protected areas in conserving biodiversity, compared to community-managed forests. Porter-Bolland et al., authors of the study published in Forest Ecology and Management, found that community-managed forests performed better than protected areas in having lower annual deforestation rates and experienced less variation in rates of forest cover loss.

Event: International Symposium on Costs and Benefits of REDD Plus: What, Who, How and When? [viewed]

This symposium is co-organized by Hiroshima University, the UN University's Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), the Forest Research Institute Malaysia, The Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, and the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature. It seeks to take stock of current knowledge and information on costs and benefits of REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries), and to provide an opportunity to deliberate funding systems to support REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock) that protect ecosystem services as well as secure the socioeconomic well-being of local communities.

Event: Central and Eastern Europe Regional Consultation Meeting Preparatory to UNCCD COP 10 [viewed]

In preparation for the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which is scheduled to take place in Changwon City, Republic of Korea, from 10-21 October 2011, the UNCCD Secretariat is organizing the Central and Eastern Europe Regional Consultation Meeting Preparatory to COP 10 and meetings of its subsidiary bodies. Participants will convene for a SRAP Alignment Workshop on 31 August 2011, and the Regional Consultation Meeting Preparatory to COP10 from 1-3 September 2011.
