The heads of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) have held a meeting in preparation for the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December.
The international workshop on Adaptation to Climate Change in West African Agriculture, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 27-30 April 2009, brought together experts and decision makers to discuss and recommend climate change adaptation options for the agriculture, livestock, forestry and fisheries sectors in West Africa.
5 May 2009: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), under its Global Atmosphere Watch programme, is convening a workshop from 5-7 May 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland. The workshop brings together about 90 experts from 30 countries to discuss the need for new improved observational and analysis techniques to address climate-relevant questions and advance studies of atmospheric composition.
3 May 2009: A joint proposal has been submitted by the Federated States of Micronesia and Mauritius to amend the Montreal Protocol. The amendment proposes to regulate and phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a high global warming potential and promote the destruction of banks of ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
7 April 2009: The Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol held its 57th meeting in Montreal, Canada, from 30 March-3 April 2009. The Committee approved US$25.5 million for projects and activities to phase-out ozone depleting substances (ODS), including funds for the phase-out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
28 January 2009: A joint annual meeting of Global Earth Observation and Monitoring (GEOmon) and Infrastructure for Measurements of the European Carbon Cycle (IMECC) was hosted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva, Switzerland, from 26-30 January 2009.
25 November 2008: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released the 2007 Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, which indicates that the trend of rising emissions of greenhouse gases continued during that year.
25 November 2008: According to research conducted by CarboAfrica, an international research consortium of 15 institutions from Africa and Europe that includes the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Africa could be absorbing more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits.
21 November 2008: The eighth Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the 20th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (COP 8/MOP 20) took place in Doha, Qatar, from 16-20 November 2008.
13 November 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)
released a report on Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABCs) that shows that, in
addition to affecting agriculture and human health, this layer of soot and
manmade particles can both aggravate, via the absorption of sunlight, and
counteract, via the reflection of sunlight and effects on cloud formation,
climate change due to greenhouse gases.
