Event: 16th World Meteorological Congress [viewed]

The World Meteorological Congress is held every four years to decide the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) future directions. Key discussion items include: strengthening the WMO's disaster risk reduction program in the context of increased likelihood and impact of extreme weather, climate and water-related hazards and events in a warming world with a growing population; implementing integrated and improved observation and information systems to maximize the returns on investment on surface and space infrastructure in recent years; reinforcing the aeronautical meteorology programme in view of its importance to air traffic and the need for quality assurance of these services; and capacity building programmes in developing countries to help them fully participate in WMO activities and benefit from them. More than 600 delegates, including Heads of States and Governments, Ministers, senior government officials, heads of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, and representatives of WMO partner organizations will attend the three week meeting from 16 May-3 June. It will be officially opened 16 May by WMO President Alexander Bedritskiy and Secretary-General Michel Jarraud. There will be a High Level Segment for Ministers, including a speech from H.E Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheik Hasina.

High Level Taskforce Calls for Establishment of Global System for Climate Services [viewed]

12 May 2011: The High Level Task Force on a Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), which emerged from the World Climate Conference 3 of 2009, has released a report titled "Climate Knowledge for Action: A Global Framework for Climate Services - Empowering the Most Vulnerable." The report recommends the establishment of a global system to provide information to help manage climate risks and opportunities.

US, Canada and Mexico, and Federated States of Micronesia Propose HFCs Phase-down Under Montreal Protocol [viewed]

May 2011: The Ozone Secretariat has released documents in the lead up to the upcoming 31st Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) meeting, scheduled to convene in Bangkok, Thailand, in August 2011. The documents include a proposal from the US, Canada and Mexico, and one from the Federated States of Micronesia, to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the Montreal Protocol.

UNECE Air Pollution Convention Working Group Focuses on Black Carbon [viewed]

15 April 2011: The 48th session of the Working Group on Strategies and Review under the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution convened in Geneva, Switzerland, from 11-15 April 2011, and focused on strategies to reduce black carbon emissions, one of the air pollutants contributing to climate change.

African Countries Address Methyl Bromide Phase-Out Under the Montreal Protocol [viewed]

15 April 2011: The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) OzonAction Compliance Assistance Programme convened an African Regional meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, from 13-15 April 2011. The meeting aimed to assess the status of parties' progress towards meeting the January 2015 deadline of methyl-bromide phase-out.

Multilateral Fund Approves Funding for HCFC Phase-Out in 39 Countries [viewed]

15 April 2011: The Executive Committee (ExCom) of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) convened for its 63rd meeting in Montreal, Canada, from 4-8 April 2011. The meeting committed over US$40 million to phase-out approximately 400 tons of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in 39 developing countries.
