20 November 2008: In a message marking Africa Industrialization
Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for strengthening African industry
so that it can “play its rightful, catalytic role” and help overcome the
current triple financial, food and climate crises as well as make critical
progress on eradicating poverty.
18 November 2008: During his first visit to the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
reaffirmed WIPO's unique role within the UN system in promoting intellectual
property, innovations and investment in new technology, which are crucial to
stimulate economic development and to tackle the current financial, climate,
food and oil crisis.
19 November 2008: Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the
UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) addressed the African
Conference of Ministers in Charge of Environment on Climate Change for
Post-2012, and underscored the urgency of incorporating land and soil into the
climate change dialogue.
19 November 2008: Speaking at the 35th Special Session of
the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference, taking place from 18-22
November 2008, in Rome, Italy, FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf outlined a
strategy for a new global system for food security that would ensure that
production meets growing demand in the face of climate change and the need for

18 November 2008: The Workshop on Climate Change Impacts and
Adaptation to Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries at the National and Regional
Levels, jointly co-organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO),
the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Southeast Climate Consortium
(SECC) of the US, opened on 18 November 2008 in Orlando, Florida, US, and will
conclude on 21 November.
17 November 2008: The UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the
International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), supported by the
Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation, are launching a programme to increase access
by farmers in developing countries to weather-indexed insurance schemes.
17 November 2008: On 14 and 15 November 2008, UN
Secretary-General was in Washington, DC, US, to take part in the Group of 20
(G20) Financial Summit. In a statement to the assembled leaders, Ban Ki-moon
stated that “today's financial crisis should not evolve into tomorrow's human
crisis,” adding that leaders should not use it to justify neglecting other
critical issues such as poverty and hunger, the food crisis, and climate
