UNESCO Presents “Water in a Changing World” Report [viewed]

New report highlights crucial role of water in development

12 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has presented the UN World Water Development Report 3, which will be launched at the Fifth World Water Forum, scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 16-22 March 2009. The Report, coordinated by the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), is the result of a cooperative effort by the 26 UN agencies and entities that make up UN-Water.

WHO and Biodiversity Experts Present Scientific Findings at Climate Congress [viewed]

Lower precipitation due to climate change causes water scarcity and reduced food production

12 March 2009: Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) presented findings regarding climate change impacts to human health at the international scientific congress titled “Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions,” which ran from 10-12 March 2009, in Copenhagen, Denmark. They noted the “adverse consequences” of climate change on health, highlighted the challenges inherent in addressing resulting impacts, and stressed the health benefits of mitigation activities. In addition, they underscored the uneven distribution of health impacts of climate change globally, identifying populations in small island developing States, mountainous regions, large urban areas, coastal areas, and areas that lack access to water among the most vulnerable.

CIAT Adopts “Strategic Directions” as Framework for Eco-Efficient Agriculture to Improve Agriculture Adaptation [viewed]

March 2009: The Board of Trustees of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), a research center of the Consultative Group on International Research (CGIAR), has approved CIAT's new “Strategic Directions” as a framework for future work towards “eco-efficient” agriculture at the service of the poor of Latin America and the tropical world. CIAT's vision of eco-efficient agriculture centers on the efficient use of resources to enhance the productivity, competitiveness, resilience, sustainability, fairness and equity of agricultural production, as a strategy to respond to the challenges of hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and climate change.

27 February 2009: The Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 17th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) took place from 23-27 February 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The IPM's role was to provide a forum to discuss policy options and possible actions to enable the implementation of measures and policies concerning agriculture, rural development, land, drought, desertification and Africa – the thematic issues under consideration during the CSD16/CSD17 two-year “implementation cycle.”
