IFPRI's Joachim von Braun Calls for Better Integration of Food Security and Climate Change Agendas [viewed]
July 2008: In a comment on the G8 leaders' statement on global food security,
Joachim von Braun, Director General of the International Food Policy Research
Institute (IFPRI), welcomed the proposed actions regarding global markets and
increasing food production, while criticizing the lack of actions on social
protection and nutrition for the poorest.
11 July 2008: Delegates to the Southern Cone Regional Workshop on Sustainable
Energy, which took place on 11 July 2008, in Santiago, Chile, identified
ensuring equal access to energy sources, diversifying the energy matrix, and
advancing towards regional energy alliances as some of the region's key priorities.
July 2008: An International Workshop on Advances in Operational Weather Systems
for Fire Danger Rating, organized jointly by World Meteorological Organization
(WMO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Panel for Global Observation
of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD), and Natural Resources Canada's
Canadian Forest Service, in collaboration with a number of other co-sponsors, is
being held from 14-16 July 2008, in Edmonton, Canada.
Regional Symposium on Climate Change, Food Security, Sea Level Rise and Environment in South Asia to Convene in Dhaka, Bangladesh [viewed]
July 2008: The Ohio State University, the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Regional Office for
Asia and the Pacific, and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and
Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with a number of agencies, are organizing the
Regional Symposium on Climate Change, Food Security, Sea Level Rise and
Environment in South Asia in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 25-29 August 2008.
July 2008: The Sixth Summit of the Group of Eight Developing Islamic Countries
(D8), (7-8 July 2008, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) concluded
with the adoption of the “Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Meeting Global Challenges
through Innovative Cooperation,” which recognizes that the food and energy
crises pose a serious threat to socio-economic stability.
2008: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will consider the global food and energy
crises, with a particular eye to concern about macroeconomic and political
stability in numerous countries, in a plenary meeting on 18 July 2008.
14 July 2008: The UN Economic and Social Council's (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment
will open on 15 July 2008, and will be organized around the theme “Building
capabilities and capacities at all levels for timely humanitarian assistance,
including disaster risk reduction.”
11 July 2008: Speaking during a Panel discussion on
“Implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the context of
current challenges,” Kemal Dervis, Administrator of the UN Development
Programme (UNDP), noted that economic growth is threatened by shortages of
natural resources such as energy, water and atmosphere, and stressed that MDG 7
on environmental sustainability is an absolute key priority.
10 July 2008: The International Symposium on Coping with Global Change in
Marine Social-Ecological Systems took place from 8-11 July 2008, in Rome, Italy. The Symposium,
organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Global
Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics and the European Network of Excellence for Oceans Ecosystem
Analysis, brought together over 200 experts and policymakers from around
the globe to share experiences
and identify key next steps to promote resilience of marine social-ecological systems.
