July 2011: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has released a series of briefs on food security and climate change in Africa. The briefs use a selection of climate scenarios to model hydrological and temperature impacts on productivity and income, as well as adaptation scenarios.

Event: International Symposium on Drought and National Drought Policies [viewed]

This symposium is organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). It will build on the WMO meeting on national drought policies held at George Mason University, Fairfax, US, from 14-15 July 2011, which outlined steps for countries to reduce drought risks and help coordinate the development of a "best-practices" compendium on developing drought policies. The collaboration between the WMO and UNCCD builds on recent partnerships, such as on the use of the Standard Precipitation Index as a universal drought index.

The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recently agreed on a need for a roadmap on climate change and genetic resources. The Commission is the only permanent forum for governments to discuss and negotiate matters specifically relevant to biological diversity for food and agriculture.

UNGA Debates Achieving the Right to Water in the Context of the MDGs [viewed]

29 July 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) concluded its debate on challenges to achieving the human right to water and sanitation in the context of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with some delegates stressing the impact of climate change on the realization of this right, in particular in least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS).

Event: Global Soil Partnership for Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Launch [viewed]

On the basis of the recommendation of FAO's High-Level External Committee (HLEC) on the Millennium Development Goals to the Director-General (13-14 October 2009) and the discussions and conclusions from the 22nd Committee on Agriculture (COAG), which took place from 16-19 June 2010, preparatory activities have been initiated to develop a vision statement, strategy and action plan towards the establishment of a Global Soil Partnership (GSP) for Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation. The GSP is expected to develop synergies and cost savings among the various existing networks and programmes.

Emergency Ministerial-Level Meeting on the Horn of Africa Discusses Response to Crisis [viewed]

25 July 2011: An emergency Ministerial-Level meeting on the drought crisis in the Horn of Africa, convened by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), concluded that efforts to build long-term resilience and safeguard the foundations of food security will require a focus on the humanitarian issues affecting the region, including conflict, preservation of humanitarian space, nutrition, disaster risk reduction (DRR), health and education services, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
