The 36th Session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will focus on the theme "The power of partnerships in advancing smallholder agriculture in developing countries". Partnerships serve smallholder farmers in many ways from expanding their operations cost-effectively to providing access to knowledge, research and technology.
29 January 2013: The inception workshop of the Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) in Burkina Faso took place on 14 December 2013, in Ouagadougou, and validated a study carried out by the Global Water Partnership (GWP) office in Burkina Faso that finds that climate change will have a strong impact on the country's water security and negatively impact most economic sectors.
30 January 2013: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has launched a series of training modules focused on smallholders, the environment and climate change developed for actors involved in project design, supervision and implementation.
29 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) held a workshop at the Kiribati Institute of Technology to train government officers to use cost-benefit analysis (CBA) as a framework to improve decision making and project quality, in particular for projects affected by climate change.
28 January 2013: The 20th session of the African Union (AU) Summit met from 21-28 January 2013, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme of “Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance.” Heads of State from 37 countries discussed a range of issues, including peace and security, maternal health, poverty, malaria, climate change, and the post-2015 development agenda.
11 January 2013: A report prepared for the Nordic Working Group for Global Climate Negotiations (NOAK) finds that synergies between climate change adaptation and mitigation can foster a more efficient, responsive and comprehensive climate policy.
21 January 2013: A study by two centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), namely the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), demonstrates large income benefits of intercropping coffee and bananas in Uganda, as well as evidence that intercropping may help farmers cope with climate change.
25 January 2013: The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Tuiloma Neroni Slade, has released the Pacific Plan 2012 Annual Progress Report and its associated Reporting Annex. The documents highlight challenges faced by the region, and outline progress made towards greater regional integration and cooperation in various areas, including climate change, fisheries, gender equality and disability-inclusive development.
24 January 2013: The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors has approved a US$87 million grant to support the Government of Mozambique in developing a climate change-resilient economy and to scale-up high impact nutrition interventions. Mozambique's climate change development policy operation seeks to support policy reforms that enable long-term growth and climate-proof development plans.
This conference aims to highlight the growing importance of conserving and restoring soil organic carbon for multiple win-win benefits within various land type and land use settings. The conference will review the state of science and further knowledge needs involved and discuss, inter alia; land use and land restoration practices; how to verify carbon sequestration and linkages with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other global goals, agreements and negotiations; and how to increase the flow of climate-linked funding for land and soil restoration. Organizers include the European Commission, the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and United Nations University (UNU). Following the Soil Carbon Sequestration conference, the FP7 Environment funded SoilTrEC project will organize a training event for Early Stage Researchers that wish to expand their knowledge into farming approaches and their impacts on farming sustainability.
