the Community Work Programme, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, President of the Economic
Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, highlighted the economic
impacts of the increase of food and commodity prices in West African States.
10 September 2008: In a speech at Fairleigh Dickinson University, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki moon outlined the challenges of the world today, including climate change, the food and energy crises, and the fear of a global financial crisis.
4 September 2008: The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) seminar entitled “Food and Energy Crisis: Opportunities and Challenges for Latin America and the Caribbean” took place in Santiago, Chile, from 4-5 September 2008.
1 September 2008: On the eve of the third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, which met from 2-4 September 2008, in Accra, Ghana, Lennart Båge, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), urged donors and their partners in developing countries to take responsibility for accelerating action to meet the commitments in the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness.
September 2008: The third African Green Revolution
Conference convened from 28-29 August 2008, in Oslo, Norway, organized by Yara
International ASA, a Norwegian fertilizer company, in partnership with the
Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the African Development Bank
(ADB) Norad, Norfund and Rabobank.
29 August 2008: The International Symposium on Climate
Change and Food Security in South Asia, which met from 25-30 August 2008, in
Dhaka, Bangladesh, and was co-sponsored by Ohio State University, the World
Meteorological Organization, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the University of
Dhaka and the Government of Bangladesh, adopted a Declaration and
recommendations towards minimizing the short- and long-term vulnerability of
the South Asian region to climate change.
25 August 2008: A UN-sponsored International Symposium on
Climate Change and Food Security in South Asia, taking place from 25-30 August
in Dhaka, Bangladesh, aims to develop an agriculture mitigation and adaptation
framework for climate change implementation in South Asia. Participants are
also expected to recommend policy and financial innovations to enable the
implementation of the framework and its integration into the sustainable
development planning of South Asia countries.
21 August 2008: The Supporting Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Development (SEED) Initiative has announced the winners of its 2008 SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development. The SEED Initiative is a global network for action on sustainable development partnerships, founded by IUCN, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), to deliver progress toward the internationally-agreed goals in the UN's Millennium Declaration and the commitments made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
August 2008: The Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable
Development and Aid Effectiveness will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 26-28
August 2008, and will focus on climate change, food security and aid
effectiveness. The event will bring together African parliamentarians and
experts, as well as members of parliament from Europe and Japan.
August 2008: The Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding Capacity Building (GIPB), a platform and partnership of public, private and civil society institutions hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the FAO Inter-Departmental Working Group on Bioenergy, has called for expanded, up-to-date information on genetic resources and breeding of selected underutilized species, together with detailed analysis of their potential as bioenergy crops adaptable to sustainable smallholder production systems.
