30 October 2008: Over 600 participants representing governments, regions and other local authorities gathered in Saint Malo, France, from 29-30 October 2008, for the “First World Summit of Regions, Climate Change: Regions in Action.”
29 October 2008: Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the UN
Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) told a news conference at UN
Headquarters, NY, US, that “the nexus between land degradation and climate
change is clear,” with global warming being likely to lead to more extreme
weather events, which could lead to soil erosion and loss of land cover.
29 October 2008: In a speech delivered at the University of
Philippines, in Manila, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon indicated that his
“most immediate concern” was that the financial crisis could “eclipse the
global effort to address climate change.” He noted that, while developing
countries face the same pressures as the US and Europe, they lack the resources
to tackle the crisis.
28 October 2008: The Conservation Agriculture Carbon Offset
Consultation, jointly organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) and the Conservation Technology Information Center, opened on 28 October
2008, and will conclude on 30 October, in West Lafayette, Indiana, US.
24 October 2008: During the World Food Day observance at UN Headquarters in New York, US, celebrated on 23 October, the heads of the UN, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Clinton Global Initiative called for tackling the roots of the interrelated challenges of food security, high energy prices and climate change.
21 October 2008: Speaking at the ninth Regional Consultation
Mechanism (RCM) meeting of UN agencies and organizations working in Africa,
which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, UN Deputy Secretary-General
Asha-Rose Migiro warned that the global financial crisis, compounded by food
shortages and the effects of climate change, could “derail Africa's prospects”
of attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
22 October 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a Green Economy Initiative, which seeks to respond to the global economic downturn by focusing economic growth and job creation in environmental industries.
18 October 2008: During a meeting on the sidelines of the
Francophonie Summit, which convened in Quebec City, Canada, from 17-19 October
2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and French President Nicolas Sarkozy
agreed on the need to hold an emergency G-8 summit to address the financial
crisis and ensure that its negative impact on the world's economies does not
undermine the major UN efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, to
fight against the effects of climate change and to address the food crisis.
19 October 2008: On World Food Day, celebrated on 18
October, the Joint UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Division of Nuclear techniques in Food and
Agriculture (NAFA) highlighted the role of nuclear technology in developing new
crop varieties that can withstand climate-induced external stress, such as
drought, and thereby contributing to achieving sustainable food security.
16 October 2008: On World Food Day (WFD), the heads of UN agencies called attention to the ongoing crisis of hunger and its interrelations with climate change and rising fuel prices.
