Farmers in Togo Receive Climate Adaptation Support from FAO and EU [viewed]

FAO3 August 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) announced the results of a two-year effort to support farmers in Togo. The FAO, with funds from the EU, provided support for 20,000 Togolese farmers to respond to floods and food price increases occurring in 2007 and 2008.

ADB Report Warns Against Climate Change Impacts on Health [viewed]

July 2011: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has released a report titled "Accounting for Health Impacts of Climate Change." The report highlights that Asia and the Pacific host the greatest number of people vulnerable to the projected adverse impacts of climate change, which will challenge the public health community at the global, national, and local levels with the appearance of new diseases and the proliferation of existing ones.

Event: Review of the Pacific Adaption to Climate Change Meeting [viewed]

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is convening this meeting with representative of the 13 Pacific Island Countries involved in the Pacific Adaption to Climate Change (PACC) Project, to review and discuss progress and to share experiences and lessons learned. The PACC is implemented by SPREP in partnership with the UN Development Programme (UNDP). It is a US$13 million project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project provides funds and support for national climate change adaptation projects in the areas of coastal management, food production and security, and water resources management.

July 2011: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has released a series of briefs on food security and climate change in Africa. The briefs use a selection of climate scenarios to model hydrological and temperature impacts on productivity and income, as well as adaptation scenarios.

Event: International Symposium on Drought and National Drought Policies [viewed]

This symposium is organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). It will build on the WMO meeting on national drought policies held at George Mason University, Fairfax, US, from 14-15 July 2011, which outlined steps for countries to reduce drought risks and help coordinate the development of a "best-practices" compendium on developing drought policies. The collaboration between the WMO and UNCCD builds on recent partnerships, such as on the use of the Standard Precipitation Index as a universal drought index.
