USAID, Rockefeller Foundation Launch Global Resilience Partnership [viewed]

usaid-rockefeller-foundation20 August 2014: The Rockefeller Foundation and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have launched a fund intended to build the resilience of disaster-prone communities in the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia. The initial investment of US$100 million will fund the best ideas and innovations resulting from a Resilience Challenge open to academic, non-profit and private sector entities.

ADB Assesses Climate Change Costs in South Asia [viewed]

ADB19 August 2014: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has published a report, titled ‘Assessing the Costs of Climate Change and Adaptation in South Asia,' which predicts that by 2050, the collective economy of six countries - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka - will see an average annual economic loss of around 1.8% of GDP by 2050 that could rise to 8.8% in 2100 if the “world continues on its current fossil fuel-intensive path.”

Event: Climate Change and the Post-2015 Development Framework: Developing Country Perspectives [viewed]

The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) will host a two-day event on environmental sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in London, UK. On 10 September, an event hosted by CDKN will share and discuss perspectives from the South on how climate change should be reflected in the SDGs. This will be followed, on 11 September, by a closer look at the food-water-energy nexus and how countries on three continents are managing the challenge of reducing poverty while developing sustainably. The event will be broadcast via webcast.

IFAD18 August 2014: In advance of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has released an infographic, titled ‘Investing in Small Island Developing States,' and a publication, titled ‘IFAD's Approach in SIDS: A global response to island voices for food security.' These resources highlight SIDS' characteristics, show IFAD's strategic approaches to SIDS engagement, and propose moving towards “a global response to island voices for food security.”

UNEP and Norway Sign Agreement on GRID-Arendal's 25th Anniversary [viewed]

UNEP GRID Arendal14 August 2014: On the occasion of GRID-Arendal's 25th anniversary, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director, Achim Steiner, and Olav Orheim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GRID-Arendal, signed a Programme Cooperation Agreement in which Norway renewed its contribution to UNEP's Programme of Work for 2014. The Agreement includes a commitment of US$16 million to UNEP, including US$1 million to support action on marine plastic debris and microplastics and US$500,000 to improve fish food security in West Africa.

UNEPJune 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has published a report on priority issues for small island developing States (SIDS). ‘Emerging Issues for Small Island Developing States: Results of the UNEP Foresight Process' is one of UNEP's contributions to the Third International SIDS Conference convening in Apia, Samoa, in September 2014, and it is aligned with one of the thematic issues of the Conference: “identify new and emerging challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of SIDS and ways and means to address them.”

First US-Africa Summit Addresses Energy, Food Security [viewed]

us.africa.summit6 August 2014: The US-Africa Summit, which brought together over 50 Heads of State from Africa and US President Barack Obama, addressed, inter alia: promoting inclusive sustainable development; expanding trade and investment ties; engaging young African leaders; and expanding cooperation on peace and security. The Summit also featured sessions on resilience and food security in a changing climate, and combatting wildlife trafficking.
