Pacific Community Conference Focuses on Climate Change and Food Security [viewed]

8 November 2011: The seventh Conference of the Pacific Community convened in Noumea, New Caledonia, under the theme “Climate Change and Food Security – Managing the Risks for Sustainable Development,” from 7-8 November 2011. The Conference emphasized the importance of a paradigm shift in addressing climate change, not necessarily “doing different business, but rather doing business differently” to determine the level of acceptable risk and to prepare responses.

SPC Assesses Vulnerability of Tropical Fisheries to Climate Change [viewed]

7 November 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has released a publication titled “Vulnerability of Tropical Pacific Fisheries and Aquaculture to Climate Change," which includes contributions from 88 international scientists and fisheries specialists. The publication concludes that there will be winners and losers as a consequence of climate change in the Pacific region.

IFPRI Study Confirms Concerns over Land-use Change Effects of EU Biofuel Policies [viewed]

4 November 2011: A new study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a centre of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), analyzes the question of indirect land-use change (ILUC) in relation to the EU's Renewable Energy Directive. It finds that ILUC issues are a valid concern, but that the impact depends on the type of feedstock crop used as well as other factors such liberalization of international trade in biofuels.

Event: Climate Change Mitigation with Indigenous Peoples: Practices, Lessons Learned and Prospects [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the UN University (UNU), in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Australian Government Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The workshop aims to: reflect the range of perspectives concerning indigenous peoples/local communities and climate change responses (including mitigation); support the build-up of understanding and peer-reviewed literature in the field of indigenous peoples, local communities and climate change mitigation; compile data and grey literature that are relevant for understanding climate change mitigation involving local and indigenous knowledge holders, local populations, and developing country scientists; support Indigenous peoples', local communities' and developing country scientists' engagement and research in international climate dialogues; provide policy makers with relevant information on the mitigation potential of indigenous peoples and local communities; and outline a publication in a Special Issue of a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

ADB Supports New Green Businesses in Coral Triangle Communities [viewed]

ADB3 November 2011: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will assist coastal communities in remote areas of the Coral Triangle of Indonesia and the Philippines in starting small, green businesses that will help preserve threatened marine environments in the area.

ADB Supports Cambodia's Floods Recovery [viewed]

ADB3 November 2011: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing emergency humanitarian assistance of $3 million to the Cambodian Government for recovery efforts from recent floods. The grant from the Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund will be used to supply rice seed to rural households, along with food and cash-for-work schemes for the repair of flood-damaged roads and support for temporary repairs to irrigation canals.

IFAD, WFP Issue Weather Index-based Insurance Guide [viewed]

7 November 2011: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have released a guide titled "Weather Index-based Insurance in Agricultural Development: A Technical Guide for Practitioners to Help Mange Weather Risks." The guide has emerged from the Weather Risk Management Facility (WRMF), a joint programme between IFAD and WFP, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

IFAD to Meet with Dutch Ministry on Agricultural Responses to Climate Change [viewed]

4 November 2011: Kanayo Nwanze, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), is scheduled to meet with various members of the Dutch Government to discuss how best to support developing country governments to create stronger policies for rural development and infrastructure, including strengthening responses to risks such as climate change.

UNGA Second Committee Highlights Challenges of Climate Change and Desertification, Looks Ahead to Rio+20 [viewed]

3 November 2011: The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) concluded its general discussion on sustainable development, with a number of speakers referring to the challenges of drought, desertification, climate change and land degradation. Delegates also looked ahead to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), expressing support and some reservations about the “green economy.”
