16 July 2008: A new report from the Organisation for
Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), entitled “Economic Assessment of
Biofuel Support Policies,” concludes that “government support of biofuel
production in OECD countries is costly, has a limited impact on reducing
greenhouse gases and improving energy security, and has a significant impact on
world crop prices.”
16 July 2008: The
Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has announced that the 2010
Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA 2010) will include a remote sensing
survey, which will document trends in the rate of deforestation, afforestation
and natural forest expansion over the last three decades; provide easy access
to remote sensing imagery; create a methodology and framework for monitoring of
forest change; and enhance countries' capacities to monitor, assess and report
on changes in forest cover.

project aimed to help rural communities harness the potential of solar energy
recently concluded in Timor-Leste.
11 July 2008: Delegates to the Southern Cone Regional Workshop on Sustainable
Energy, which took place on 11 July 2008, in Santiago, Chile, identified
ensuring equal access to energy sources, diversifying the energy matrix, and
advancing towards regional energy alliances as some of the region's key priorities.
11 July 2008: The World Intellectual Property Organization
(WIPO) will hold a symposium on Patent Landscaping and Transfer of Technology
under Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) on 26 August 2008, in
Geneva, Switzerland.

(WMO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Regional Office for
Asia and the Pacific, and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and
Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with a number of agencies, are organizing the
Regional Symposium on Climate Change, Food Security, Sea Level Rise and
Environment in South Asia in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 25-29 August 2008.

July 2008: The Sixth Summit of the Group of Eight Developing Islamic Countries
(D8), (7-8 July 2008, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) concluded
with the adoption of the “Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Meeting Global Challenges
through Innovative Cooperation,” which recognizes that the food and energy
crises pose a serious threat to socio-economic stability.
