19 November 2008: The Icelandic singer Björk endorsed
“CoolPlanet2009,” an initiative recently announced by the UN Regional
Information Centre (UNRIC) for Western Europe that aims to raise public
awareness on the impacts of global warming and to mobilize support for new
commitments under climate change agreement, once the Kyoto Protocol's first
commitment period ends in 2012.
18 November 2008: During his first visit to the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
reaffirmed WIPO's unique role within the UN system in promoting intellectual
property, innovations and investment in new technology, which are crucial to
stimulate economic development and to tackle the current financial, climate,
food and oil crisis.
17 November 2008: The World Meteorological Organization
(WMO) Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) Panel convened from 17-21
November 2008, in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, to discuss ways to broaden its
global coverage.
18 November 2008: The second meeting of the Focus Group on
information and communication technologies (ICTs) and climate change,
established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), will convene
from 25-28 November 2008, at ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
14 November 2008: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council re-elected Monique Barbut as CEO during its biannual meeting, which took place from 11-13 November 2008, in Washington DC, US. The Council also renewed efforts to scale up technology transfer to developing countries looking to mitigate and adapt to climate change challenges, by approving projects amounting to US$50 million for climate-related activities.
17 November 2008: On 14 and 15 November 2008, UN
Secretary-General was in Washington, DC, US, to take part in the Group of 20
(G20) Financial Summit. In a statement to the assembled leaders, Ban Ki-moon
stated that “today's financial crisis should not evolve into tomorrow's human
crisis,” adding that leaders should not use it to justify neglecting other
critical issues such as poverty and hunger, the food crisis, and climate
change.
November 2008: The Steering Committee of the UN Economic
Commission for Europe (UNECE) Energy Efficiency 21 (EE21) project will hold the
12th session of the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency Investments
for Climate Change Mitigation in Geneva, Switzerland, on 19 December 2008.
14 November 2008: The 63rd Session of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council opened with a High-Level Segment on
emerging trends in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector,
including climate change and cybersecurity.
12 November 2008: The proposed annotated agenda for the 44th
meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has been
released.
6 November 2008: The UN Industrial Development Organization
(UNIDO) and the International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies are
jointly organizing the World Hydrogen Energy Summit, to be held in Istanbul,
Turkey, from 15-17 July 2010.
