Event: First Global Methane Initiative Workshop and Exhibition in the Middle East [viewed]

The Saudi Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is hosting this Global Methane Initiative (GMI) workshop to disseminate technical information, present profit-generating technologies and share best practices that cost-effectively reduce methane emissions. Saudi Arabia is a member of the GMI, which is an international public-private initiative that advances cost-effective, near-term methane abatement and recovery and use of methane as a clean energy source in the agricultural, coal mine, municipal solid waste, oil and gas, and wastewater sectors. The event is being organized in cooperation with Saudi Aramco, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the UN Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC).

ECOSOC Hosts Integration Segment on Employment and Decent Work [viewed]

ECOSOC1 April 2015: The 2015 Integration Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) addressed the theme of 'Achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all.' Bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors, in dialogue with UN Member States and civil society representatives, the Segment examined policy recommendations for decent work and employment, and how these issues fit in with ongoing discussions on the post-2015 development agenda and other UN processes.

In addition, the multilateral development banks (MDBs) and World Bank released publications related to sustainable energy finance, and EBRD and the World Bank hosted energy efficiency and renewable energy events.

European Mayors to Cooperate on Climate Change [viewed]

The meeting, which took place on 26 March 2015, in Paris, France, came in advance of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris in December 2015. French President Francois Hollande addressed the European mayors, stating that major cities must be “pioneers” in terms of low-emission practices.

Norway, Mexico Submit INDCs [viewed]

eco27 March 2015: The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Ministerial Conference on Climate Change, which convened in Safranbolu, Turkey, concluded with the adoption of the 'Safranbolu Declaration on Enhancing Regional pre-COP 21 Ambition on Climate Change,' including a resolution from its ten member States to deliver their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) towards a “fair, flexible, durable and inclusive legally-binding post-2020 climate agreement” at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France, in December 2015.

European Council Addresses Next Steps for Energy Union [viewed]

European Council19 March 2015: The European Council has confirmed its commitment to the EU's Energy Union at a meeting focused on designing the first steps toward the Union. The Council released its 'Conclusions on the Energy Union,' which call for concrete actions to support the Union and a forward-looking climate policy. The Conclusions also call for coordinated climate diplomacy ahead of the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015 and intensified work on financing, technology transfer and capacity building.
