BRICS Launch Development Bank [viewed]

vi-brics-summit16 July 2014: The Sixth BRICS Summit resulted in the establishment of the New Development Bank, which is to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging and developing economies. The Summit also launched a BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), and issued a declaration outlining the five countries' common position on a number of global issues, including climate change and sustainable energy.

UN Secretary-General Appoints Special Envoy on Climate Change [viewed]

mary-robinson14 July 2014: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as his Special Envoy for Climate Change. Robinson was brought on to engage Heads of State and Government, help mobilize political will and action, and raise ambition in advance of the 2014 Climate Summit.

Workshop Addresses HFC Management [viewed]

UNEP OZONE13 July 2014: The Workshop on Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) Management provided an opportunity for focused and in-depth discussions on key issues related to HFC management. Sessions addressed four topics, namely: technical aspects; legal aspects; finance and technology transfer; and policies and measures. The workshop was convened in response to discussions held at the twenty-fifth Meeting of the Parties (MOP 25) to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (Montreal Protocol).

US, China to Cooperate on Energy and Forests to Tackle Climate Change [viewed]

WMO Climatology Commission Calls for More Frequent Climate Baselines [viewed]

WMO9 July 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Commission for Climatology convened to adopt a 2014-2018 work plan aimed at accelerating national efforts to deliver and use climate services, and address issues such as data management, climate prediction and capacity building. The Commission also recommended that governments adopt a two-tier approach to updating the 30-year baselines used by scientists and meteorological services to monitor the weather and climate, and make comparisons with past conditions.

EC Awards €1 Billion to Demonstrate Low-Carbon Technologies [viewed]

European Union8 July 2014: The European Commission (EC) has announced the results of the second call for proposals under the New Entrants' Reserve 300 programme (NER 300), which is funded from the sale of 300 million emission allowances. The EC awarded one billion euro funding to 19 renewable energy projects for demonstration activities. A carbon capture and storage (CCS) project was selected for the first time under the programme.

Event: ICAO Environmental ​Seminars in the APAC Region [viewed]

As part of a series of two environmental seminars held back-to-back in each region of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Aviation and Environment Seminar will be held from 28-29 October 2014, and the States' Action Plans Seminar will be held from 29-30 October 2014, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the Asia and Pacific (APAC) Region. The seminars are supporting ICAO Member States in their efforts to institute climate-friendly aviation. The first seminar, intended for civil aviation, environment, energy, industry, civil society, academia, and National Action Plan (NAP) representatives, as well as the general public, will cover: aviation and environmental outlook, aircraft noise, local air quality, global emissions, sustainable alternative fuels, market-based measures, technology, operations, green airports, States' action plans, assistance to States and financing​. The second seminar is for NAP Focal Points to learn about ICAO Guidance on State Action Plans; the Action Plan Emissions Reduction (APER) website, supporting documents and ICAO tools; assistance for the implementation of the Action Plan; and States' best practices.
