Event: Third Workshop of the LEDS-LAC Regional Platform [viewed]

Chile's Environment Ministry and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) are co-hosting the Third Workshop of the Latin American Regional Platform on Low Emission Strategies (LEDS-LAC) of the Global Alliance on Development Strategies Low in Emissions (LEDS Global Partnership) under the theme 'From Planning to Implementation'. The Workshop will provide a forum for officials from Latin American governments and international organizations as well as technical experts and other stakeholders in the region to share experiences and best practices, participate in training, establish collaborative links and work, and discuss innovative ways to achieve low-carbon development that is also resilient to the impacts of climate change. It also will seek to construct a shared vision, find synergies with other regional initiatives and discuss the priorities, services and collaborative activities the Regional Platform should address in its 2015 work plan.

Latin American and Caribbean Forum Discusses Future of Carbon Markets [viewed]

Latinamericanforum5 September 2014: The eighth Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) brought together businesses, governments and other stakeholders to exchange information on the latest developments in emissions trading schemes (ETS), low-emission development and the future of the carbon markets. Participants addressed, inter alia: climate change adaptation and mitigation opportunities at multiple levels; and climate finance and policy options, including carbon pricing and the role of the public and private sectors in concerted climate action.

Event: First Carbon-CAP Stakeholder Workshop [viewed]

The first stakeholder workshop of the Carbon-CAP project will focus on the theme of 'The Role of Consumption-based Emissions in Climate Policy,' and will be funded by the EU's Seventh Programme for Research (FP7). Consortium members will present research results from the first year of the project. Experts from around the world will be invited to participate and contribute to maximizing the event output for the project's future work. Three sessions, held over two days, will include presentations on: carbon footprint models; options and business experience with consumption-based environmental policies; and interactive modeling of transformation scenarios. The Carbon-CAP project has two objectives: stimulating innovative European and international climate policies through improved knowledge based on consumption emissions; and realizing a more effective policy mix for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050.

EC President-Elect Appoints Climate and Energy Commissioner [viewed]

European Union 10 September 2014: President-elect of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has announced the composition and organization of work for the next European Commission. In the new structure, six Vice-Presidents will lead Project Teams and steer and coordinate the work of Commissioners. A Project Team on the ‘Energy Union' will be led by Alenka Bratušek (Slovenia). Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete (Spain) will be in charge of both Climate Action and Energy policy.

ADB Highlights Wind and PV Potential in Developing Asia [viewed]

ADBAugust 2014: A total investment of US$2.3 trillion will be required for wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) to supply 10% of developing Asia's electricity in 2035, according to a report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The study, titled ‘Diversification of Energy Supply: Prospects for Emerging Energy Sources,' examines the status and future prospects of wind energy, PV and unconventional gas in the region.

2014 SEED Awards Celebrate African, Low-Carbon and Women's Enterprises [viewed]

Seed10 September 2014: A total of 41 enterprises from Africa and elsewhere have received the 2014 SEED Award, which celebrates innovative social and environmental start-up enterprises in developing and emerging economies tackling key sustainable development challenges at community level. The awards were announced during the 2014 SEED Awards Africa Symposium, held from 10-11 September 2014, in Nairobi, Kenya.
