ITU Report Considers Relationship between Climate Change, ICTS and Regulation [viewed]

31 March 2011: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released its 2011 “Trends in Telecommunications Reform” on the theme “Enabling Tomorrow's Digital World.” The report highlights that effective regulation of ICTs is crucial for overall economic growth and inter alia examines the relationship between climate change, ICTs and regulation.

Event: ITU Sixth Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change [viewed]

This symposium is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The symposium will focus on the agenda on using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to monitor climate change, and mitigate and adapt to its effects. The symposium will focus on the issue of ICTs, the environment and climate change in Africa, and the needs of developing countries. Topics to be discussed include: mitigation and adaptation to climate change; e-waste; disaster planning; cost-effective ICT technologies; methodologies for the environmental impact assessment of ICTs; and challenges and opportunities in the transition to a green and resource efficient economy. The Symposium will be preceded by a Training Seminar on Conformity and Interoperability for Africa, to be held from 4-6 July 2011, at the same venue.

UN-HABITAT Releases Report on Cities and Climate Change [viewed]

29 March 2011: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) has released a report titled "Global Report on Human Settlements 2011 – Cities and Climate Change," which indicates that while cities are responsible for the largest proportion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, they provide clear economic and social opportunities for their inhabitants if they are planned sustainably.

LDC Eminent Persons Group Releases Report [viewed]

29 March 2011: The UN Secretary-General's Eminent Persons Group on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) has released its report, titled “Compact for Inclusive Growth and Prosperity.” The report finds that the structural limitations of LDCs must be addressed in order to close the gap between LDCs and the rest of the world, and outlines objectives and targets for a new Programme of Action (PoA), including on small island developing States (SIDS) and climate change.

Event: ITU Green Standards Week [viewed]

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will be holding its first Green Standards Week to raise awareness of the importance and opportunities of using information and communication technology (ICT) standards to build a green economy. The event will also provide Ministers and senior representatives from the ICT industry the opportunity to exchange views on how ICTs can help in the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the run-up to the 17th Conference of the Parties at the end of the year. The Week will include: a Workshop on Methodologies for Environmental Impact Assessment of ICT; a Workshop on Moving to a Green Economy through ICT Standards; and a Workshop on Submarine Cables for Ocean/Climate Monitoring and Disaster Warning: Science, Engineering, Business and Law.
