Event: High-Level Signing Ceremony for Paris Agreement [viewed]

A high-level signing ceremony, convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will take place as a first step in implementing the Paris Agreement, which was adopted in Paris, France, on 12 December 2015. The Agreement will then be open for signature in New York, US, until 17 April 2017. Countries will also need to adopt the agreement within their own legal systems, through ratification, acceptance, approval or accession. The agreement will enter into force when joined by at least 55 countries, which together represent at least 55% of global emissions. The ceremony is taking place on International Mother Earth Day. In addition to a signing ceremony in the morning, national statements will be presented throughout the day and a High-level event on implementation will convene in the afternoon.

UN Secretary-General, UNGA President Brief States on Paris Agreement, Next Steps [viewed]

United Nations15 December 2015: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Mogens Lykketoft briefed UNGA Member States on the outcomes of the Paris Climate Change Conference and its Paris Agreement adopted on 12 December 2015. They urged Member States to continue to act with collective responsibility, leadership and unity to implement action on climate change, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and outlined next steps on implementation.

EEA Reviews Environmental Performance of EU Transport [viewed]

EEA14 December 2015: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has published a report, titled 'Evaluating 15 Years of Transport and Environmental Policy Integration,' which analyzes the evolution of freight and passenger transport and related impacts on the environment in the EU since 2000. The report concludes that greater efforts, including technological innovation and policies targeting behavioral change, are needed to decarbonize the tranport sector and achieve EU emissions reduction targets.

UNIDO, GEF Provide Mitigation Training to CIS Experts [viewed]

GEF UNIDO7 December 2015: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has organized a workshop to train experts from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to develop programmes for climate-change mitigation. Approximately 40 participants from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and Ukraine received training in building programmes to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to promote the uptake of clean technologies and other mitigation actions.

EEA Reports on Europe's 2014 Flows of Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases [viewed]

EEA9 December 2015: The European Environment Agency (EEA) issued a report, on 9 December 2015, detailing the production, use, import, export and destruction of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) in 2014. The EEA points out that data on all of these gases are important not only for tracking EU progress in meeting its obligations under the UNFCCC, but also for the preparations for negotiations in 2016 for an HFC Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

UNFCCC COP 21 Adopts Paris Agreement [viewed]

cop21_iisd12 December 2015: On 12 December 2015, in Paris, France, the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC adopted the Paris Agreement (FCCC/CP/2015/L.9/Rev.1), a universal, legally-binding agreement to take effect from 2020. Commenting on the new Agreement, COP 21 President Laurent Fabius, Foreign Minister, France, stated, "The Paris Agreement allows each delegation and group of countries to go back home with their heads held high. Our collective effort is worth more than the sum of our individual effort."

COP 21 Considers Revised Draft Paris Outcome [viewed]

cop21_day1110 December 2015: Negotiations continued on the draft outcome of the Paris Climate Change Conference on Thursday, 10 December, with COP 21 President Laurent Fabius introducing a revised draft text in the evening. Fabius said there are “open options” on the most complex issues of differentiation, finance and ambition, and asked delegates to examine the document with a "new perspective,” keeping the final agreement in mind, suggesting “we are extremely close to the finish line.” Following a second night of negotiations, delegates were told on Friday that the sixth meeting of the Comité de Paris would convene Saturday morning, 12 December, during which a final draft of the proposed Paris Outcome would be presented.
