ECLAC Presents Climate Change Reports

10 March 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has launched a report titled “Climate Change and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Review.” The report was released during a seminar on “Climate Change: The Challenges for Growth in Chile and Latin America,” which took place on 11 March 2009, in Santiago, Chile. The report concludes that Latin America and the Caribbean may suffer more impacts of climate change than other regions because of the number of island States present in the region, low coastal areas and prevalence of hurricanes. Considering greenhouse gas emissions in the region are relatively low (11.7% of global emissions in 2000) the authors recommend authorities to focus on adaptation.

10 March 2009: An international scientific congress titled “Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions,” organized by the International Alliance of Research Universities, began on 10 March and will run until 12 March 2009, in Copenhagen, Denmark. The congress is being hosted by the University of Copenhagen and attended by over 2,000 participants from around 80 countries.

6 March 2009: EcoSecurities has published a report, commissioned by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Titled “Challenges for a Business Case for High-Biodiversity REDD Projects and Schemes,” the report is dedicated to the exploration of market payment options for “high-biodiversity REDD” efforts, or those REDD measures that contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
