Fifth World Urban Forum Concludes [viewed]

26 March 2010: World Urban Forum 5, which took place from 22-26 March in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under the theme "The Right to the City: Bridging the Urban Divide," was hosted by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the Government of Brazil. The event gathered a record of over 13,700 participants from 150 countries to discuss issues related to the sustainability of cities in the context of rapid urbanization, and a changing climate and environment.

UNEP Collaborates on Report on Copenhagen Accord Targets [viewed]

UNDP Releases Report on the Outcomes of Copenhagen [viewed]

25 March 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has released a report it commissioned on "The Outcomes of Copenhagen: The Negotiations and the Accord." Author Alina Averchenkova recognizes that the Conference fell short of the high expectations to deliver a UN-level agreement on a future international framework on climate change, but underlines that the Copenhagen Accord reflects a political consensus on the main elements of the future framework among the major emitters and representatives of the main negotiating groups.

IEA Publishes Report on Costs of Electricity Generation [viewed]

25 March 2010: The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) have released the seventh edition of the Projected Costs of Generating Electricity. The report presents the relative costs of generating electricity from various fuels and technologies in 21 countries, concluding that no one technology “triumphs overall” and that specific national circumstances affect choices of generation methods.

FAO Publishes Key Findings of Global Forest Resources Assessment [viewed]

25 March 2010: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has published the key findings of its "Global Forest Resources Assessment 2010" (FRA 2010). Among the findings, FAO reports that the world deforestation rate has decreased over the past ten years, but continues at a high rate in many countries.

Financing for Development Dialogue Discusses Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration [viewed]

24 March 2010: The Fourth UN High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development, which convened in New York, US, on 23-24 March 2010, focused on “The Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration on Financing for Development: Status of Implementation and Tasks Ahead.” The High-level Dialogue was organized in the lead up to the forthcoming high level review on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), scheduled to take place in September this year at the same venue.

IPCC Completes Nomination Process for AR5 [viewed]

24 March 2010: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has announced the completion of the nomination process for the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5).  Over 3000 experts were nominated by IPCC national focal points and observer organizations. The Report, scheduled to be finalized in 2013-2014, will be the next comprehensive assessment of scientific information on climate change by the IPCC.

UN-REDD Programme Board Holds Fourth Meeting [viewed]

26 March 2010: The UN-REDD Programme Policy Board met for its fourth meeting from 18-19 March 2010, in Nairobi, Kenya, and approved US$14.7 million in funding for national UN-REDD programmes in Bolivia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. This decision brings the total amount of funding for UN-REDD national programmes to US$48.3 million.
