IMO Intersessional Working Group to Further Develop Reduction Mechanisms for GHG Emissions from Ships [viewed]

Second Intersessional Meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)

6 March 2009: The Second Intersessional Meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Working Group on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Ships is scheduled to take place from 9-13 March 2009, in London, UK. The meeting is expected to bring together over 200 delegates to finalize the Energy Efficiency Design Index for new ships and the revised Interim Guidelines on the Energy Efficiency Operational Index. The Group will also consider the introduction of a management tool for all ships, guidance on best practices and other voluntary operational measures, and possible impacts of the measures envisaged on the shipping sector.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Recaps Meetings with US Officials [viewed]

6 March 2009: Speaking at the noon press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York, US, Yvo de Boer reported on his recent meetings with high-level US officials in Washington, DC, US. The Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC said he had been “very encouraged” by his meetings with representatives of both Houses of Congress on the prospects for the passage of climate change legislation, as well as with senior Cabinet members. He pointed to Congress' support to set up a US cap-and-trade scheme and to provide financial support to developing countries to make the transition to a low-carbon pathway.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Parties' Submissions on Legal Implications Arising from Work of AWG-KP [viewed]

March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released four submissions on views on the legal implications arising from the work of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) pursuant to Article 3, paragraph 9, of the Kyoto Protocol. It received the submissions from Belarus, the Czech Republic on behalf of the EU, Japan and New Zealand. Article 3.9 states that commitments for subsequent periods for parties included in Annex I shall be established in amendments to Annex B and the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties shall initiate consideration of such commitments at least seven years before the end of the first commitment period.
