4 July 2008: At the
fifth Magdeburg Environmental Forum held from 3-4 July 2008, in Magdeburg,
Germany, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and car manufacturer
Daimler called for the establishment of infrastructure for electric and
fuel-cell vehicles.
1 July 2008: In his
address to the Annual Ministerial Review of the High-level Segment of the 2008
Substantive Session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Ahmed
Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD),
stressed that the UN's priority challenges as identified by the UN
Secretary-General – natural disasters, climate change, the food crisis and the
surge in fuel prices – are deeply rooted in the unprecedented loss of
biodiversity.
5 July
2008: On the occasion of the fourteenth United Nations International Day of
Cooperatives, celebrated on 5 July 2008, Juan Somavia, Director-General of the
International Labour Organization (ILO), delivered a message on confronting
climate change through cooperative enterprise.
July 2008:
The thirteenth World Water Congress will take place in Montpellier, France, from 1-4
September 2008, and will be organized under the theme “Global Changes and Water
Resources: Confronting the Expanding and Diversifying Pressures.”
1 July 2008: During the
month of July 2008, the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat is hosting an
Internet forum on “Forests and Climate Change.” Input from this discussion will
feed into the discussion on this theme at the eighth session of the UNFF, which
will convene from 20 April-1 May 2009, in New York, US.
June 2008: In an effort to
engage vulnerable groups in international debates on climate change, the UN
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) Coasts and Small Islands Platform and Local
and Indigenous Knowledge Systems Programme has launched an Internet-based
discussion forum on climate change.
20 June 2008: During its one hundredth Session, which took
place in London, UK, from 16-20 June 2008, the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) agreed that the theme for the 2009 World
Maritime Day would be “Climate change: a challenge for IMO too!”
July 2008: This training course is organized by the UN
Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Rabat and is
scheduled to take place from 13-17 October 2008 in Rabat, Morocco
25 June 2008: Many Strong Voices (MSV), a collaboration between Arctic and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that seeks to promote the well-being of these areas vulnerable to climate change, released a five-year action plan on 25 June 2008.
13 June
2008: Four parallel meetings took place between 2-13 June 2008, in Bonn,
Germany, under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Kyoto
Protocol. The second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term
Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), which was launched in Bali,
started its substantive work in Bonn, while the resumed fifth session of the Ad
Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the
Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) began the process of listing issues for further
negotiation, particularly on the Kyoto Protocol's market-based mechanisms and
on carbon sinks.
