4 August 2008: In an address to the Joint Session of the
Mexican Senate and Chamber of Deputies, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon,
noted their pivotal role in bridging the local and global, highlighting the
three inter-related challenges faced by the world today, namely, a climate
crisis, a food crisis, and an emerging development emergency.
4 August 2008: The latest issue of Tropical Timber Market
Report, a publication of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO),
provides an overview of carbon markets and reducing emissions from
deforestation and degradation (REDD). In addition to highlighting
climate-related forest experiences in several ITTO producer and consumer
countries, this issue discusses the potential contribution of the carbon market
to offsetting carbon emissions and how forest-related activities could
potentially be included in a post-2012 climate regime.
4 August 2008: The
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released its 2007 Annual Report,
which notes that the nuclear development is increasingly shaped by issues
linked to concerns over and climate change, food and energy.
3 August 2008: The fifteenth Summit meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), held from 2-3 August 2008, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, concluded with the adoption of the Colombo Declaration and the Colombo Statement on Food Security. In the Declaration, entitled “Partnership for Growth for Our People,” the Heads of State and Government reiterate the need for increased regional cooperation in tackling climate change, in particular for capacity building, the development of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects, and awareness raising.
1 August 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced, in a notification, that the state
government of Parana in Brazil has delivered on its commitment to offset all
carbon emissions arising out of the CBD Secretariat's operations between the
ninth and the tenth Conference of the Parties (COP), including the travel of
funded party representatives to attend official CBD meetings, estimated at
around 10,200 tons of carbon equivalent.
1 August 2008: The fifty-fourth Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and associated events is taking
place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 1-10 August 2008. On 8 August, a workshop
on collaboration among Large and Small States through International
Organizations to Respond to Climate Change will be held to examine the
Commonwealth Climate Action Plan, which was adopted on 24 November 2007 in
Kampala, Uganda at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
31 July 2008: The fifteenth Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned
Movement (NAM), held from 27-30 July 2008 in Tehran, Iran, concluded with the
adoption of a document in which
Ministers recognize that climate change poses serious risks and challenges,
particularly to developing countries, and call for urgent global action in
accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.
2 August 2008: The report of the 41st meeting of the Executive Board
of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is now available on its website. The
CDM Executive Board, which is the body that governs the CDM, held its 41st
meeting from 30 July to 2 August 2008 in Bonn, Germany.
1 August 2008: UN Secretary-General wore a casual outfit to kick off the “Cool UN” scheme, which seeks to curb the organization's greenhouse gas emissions, limit the use of air conditioning and save money for the UN. The UN Economic Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) premises in Bangkok, Thailand, which houses over a dozen of the Organization's entities, also joined the “Cool UN” scheme.
31 July 2008: As part of the efforts to make the Beijing
Olympics environmentally friendly, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) is
providing four electric buses for use during the Games.
