August 2008: The Focus Group on informational and
communication technologies (ICTs) and climate change, established by the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), will hold its first meeting from
1-3 September 2008, at ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
August 2008: The nineteenth South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Meeting of Officials, which will be held from 4-12 September 2008, in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, will consider
a number of climate related matters, including the Action Plan for the
implementation of the Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change
2006-2015. Participants are also scheduled to examine a Plan for Action on the
Pacific Year of Climate Change 2009.
26 August 2008: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Secretariat met with Ministers from West African countries, from 25-26 August 2008, in Cotonou, Benin, to develop a regional programme for climate change and biodiversity that provides the region with a more efficient use of resources from the GEF's Resource Allocation Framework (RAF).
25 August 2008: A UN-sponsored International Symposium on
Climate Change and Food Security in South Asia, taking place from 25-30 August
in Dhaka, Bangladesh, aims to develop an agriculture mitigation and adaptation
framework for climate change implementation in South Asia. Participants are
also expected to recommend policy and financial innovations to enable the
implementation of the framework and its integration into the sustainable
development planning of South Asia countries.

25 August 2008: The World Bank launched a worldwide
documentary competition that will highlight the social aspects of climate
change as experienced and/or observed by the film-maker(s).
August 2008: The International Tropical Timber Organization
(ITTO) is organizing, with the support of the Government of Korea through the
Seoul National University, an Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on Afforestation
and Reforestation Projects Development under the Clean Development Mechanism
(AR-CDM), which will be held from 8-12 September 2008, in Seoul, Korea.
21 August 2008: The Supporting Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Development (SEED) Initiative has announced the winners of its 2008 SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development. The SEED Initiative is a global network for action on sustainable development partnerships, founded by IUCN, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), to deliver progress toward the internationally-agreed goals in the UN's Millennium Declaration and the commitments made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
18 August 2008: UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT)
Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and
Participation Contract with the Government of the People's Republic of China on
the UN's participation in the Shanghai World Expo 2010, which will be held from
1 May to 31 October 2010 around the theme ‘Better City, Better Life.'
20 August 2008: The EU and China discussions on combating
climate change, conducted on 18 August 2008, in Paris, France, formed part of a
bilateral consultation mechanism under the EU-China Partnership on Climate
Change launched in 2005.
