9 October 2008: The Government of Canada, the UN
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Pacific
Islands News Association are supporting an initiative of the Secretariat of the
Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), to train 14 journalists from
throughout the Pacific region on environmental issues, including climate
change.
October 2008: The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and
Water Resources, Sultanate of Oman, and the Regional Centre on Urban Water
Management, Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, in cooperation with the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) and other partners, are organizing the International
Conference on Water Resources and Climate Change in the Middle East – North
Africa (MENA) Region, which will take place from 2-4 November 2008, Muscat,
Oman.
14 October 2008: More than 40 environment ministers and
high-level representatives held talks in Warsaw, Poland, from 13-14 October
2008, to prepare for the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UNFCCC,
scheduled to take place in December 2008 in Poznań, Poland. During the informal
consultations, which were chaired by Maciej Nowicki, Minister of Environment of
Poland and future COP14 President, participants underscored that Poznań will be
a milestone for the new global climate agreement and agreed that the current
financial crisis should not hinder efforts to tackle climate change.
10 October 2008: The international Conference on “Competitive Cities and Climate Change,” organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), took place from 9-10 October 2008, in Milan, Italy. The event provided the opportunity for mayors from some of the world's most important and influential cities to both address common challenges and share best practices on climate solutions.
October 2008: As part of its project to strengthen national
capacity in developing countries to assess climate change policy alternatives,
the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Environment and Energy Group has released a
series of papers on the Bali Action Plan negotiations.
13 October 2008: The International Maritime Organization's
(IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) held its 58th session from
6-10 October 2008, in London, UK. The Committee maintained momentum in limiting
or reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships, and made substantive
progress in developing technical and operational measures to address these
emissions.
10 October 2008: In a message for UN Day, to be observed on
24 October 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined that the global
threats of the 21st century, including climate change and the spread of disease
and deadly weapons, “spare no one.”
9 October 2008: Commissioned by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Paris Re and Marsh have produced an index-based weather cover for the wind energy sector. The study analyzes the technical, legal and financial feasibility of implementing weather coverage in Mexico.
12 October 2008: This publication summarizes the discussion of the High Level North-South Dialogue on Food Security and Energy Security, which was co-organized by South Centre and the Permanent Mission of Indonesia in Geneva, Switzerland, on 17 June 2008, as part of the ‘South Intellectual Platform.'
10 October 2008: In a press conference given in New York, US, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, stated that the current global market crisis could provide an opportunity for the world financial system to reconstruct itself to promote “green” growth.
