Event: Energy and Climate Ministerial of the Americas [viewed]

Hosted by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), this meeting gathers energy ministers from across the Western Hemisphere to discuss energy security, promotion of alternative energy resources and cooperation in addressing the effects of global climate change, in the framework of the “Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas” process.

WFP Launches Tree-Planting Initiative in Tajikistan [viewed]

7 April 2010: The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a tree-planting initiative in Tajikistan, which aims to secure a future source of food for the hungry poor, as well as offset some of WFP's carbon footprint. In two food-insecure areas of Tajikistan, the west and in the eastern Rasht Valley, WFP has given 800 families 40 trees each of the following varieties: apricot, pomegranate, cherry, mulberry, almond, pistachio and pine.

Wadden Sea Management Plan Adopted [viewed]

7 April 2010: The 11th Trilateral Governmental Conference, hosted by Germany at Westerland on the Wadden Sea island of Sylt, next to the Danish border, took place from on 17-18 March 2010. The participating governments adopted a management plan for the entire Wadden Sea region to support action against a number of invasive alien species and in response to major challenges resulting from the effects of climate change in the coastal area, including sea level rise and shore line protection.

UNFCCC Publishes International Transaction Log Submissions [viewed]

31 March 2010: The UNFCCC has published submissions (FCCC/SBI/2010/MISC.4) from Croatia, Japan, Spain on behalf of the EU, and Sri Lanka regarding their views on the approach to be taken by the Executive Secretary with regard to the collection of international transaction log fees.

UNGA to Consider Declaration of Support for the Yasuní-Itt Initiative [viewed]

22 March 2010: The Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN has addressed a letter to the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) dated 8 March 2010, which contains theDeclaration of Support for the Yasuní-Itt Initiative. The Declaration was adopted at the first Latin American and Caribbean Unity Summit, held in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico, on 22-23 February 2010. The letter and annex will be circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 53 (d) (Sustainable development: protection of global climate for present and future generations).

UNDP Global Event Focuses on Capacity Development [viewed]

March 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Morocco hosted a global event on "Capacity is Development" from17-19 March 2010, in Marrakesh. The event brought together world and community leaders, including development practitioners, from the North and South to discuss policies, institutional reforms and investment decisions that have enabled capable States and societies to sustain human development.

UNPFII to Consider Indigenous Peoples' Local Adaptation and Mitigation Measures [viewed]

April 2010: The ninth session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which will convene in New York, US, from 19-30 April 2010, will focus on “Indigenous peoples: development with culture and identity: articles 3 and 32 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.” This session will consider three reports on the implications of climate change for indigenous peoples' local adaptation and mitigation measures, namely: a report on the results of the UNFCCC Copenhagen meeting; a study on reindeer herding; and a study on the extent to which climate change policies and projects adhere to the standards set forth in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

April 2010: The report of the 48th session of the UN Commission for Social Development, which convened in February 2010, has been released (E/2010/26). The report focuses on the priority theme of social integration and reviews relevant UN plans and programmes of action pertaining to the situation of social groups.

Event: Seminar on environmental migration and climate change [viewed]

This seminar is part of the UNITAR Migration and Development Series. Over 20 million people were displaced by sudden-onset climate-related disasters in 2008 alone. Estimates have suggested that between 25 million to one billion people could move as a result of climate change over the next 40 years, with 200 million being the most widely cited figure. This one-day seminar aims to present a nuanced picture of the interrelation between migratory decisions and environmental degradation, exacerbated through climate change; and bring together the migration, development, climate change and environment perspective. This seminar is designed for the members of Permanent Missions. UN staff and interested representatives of civil society and the private sector.
