FAO Launches System to Model Impacts of Climate Change on Agriculture [viewed]

February 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has developed a package of models for climate change impact assessment studies at the national level called FAO-MOSAICC (Modelling System for Agricultural Impacts of Climate Change), which integrates four models related to downscaling global circulation model data, hydrology, crop growth and assessing impacts of crop yields on national economies.

Event: From Local to Rio: Linking Women's Low-Carbon Initiatives with Sustainable Development Policy [viewed]

This side event at the 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, is being organized by the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), and the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA). The event aims to highlight key issues of gender and technology and build support from the women's community for work at the next negotiating sessions of the UNFCCC, Rio 2012 and beyond. This event will draw attention to the roles of women as inventors, managers and distributors of low-emission technologies in the context of promoting sustainable development and effective climate change responses. Panelists will present successful projects on the ground and connect to women's leadership in a green economy, and highlight UN Women's goals in the context of Rio 2012. Panelists include: H. Elizabeth Thompson, UN Assistant Secretary General and Executive Coordinator of Rio 2012; Nereidge Segala, Farmer and President of Ser do Sertao, Pintadas, Brazil; Lucy Wanjiru, Programme Specialist, Gender and Environment, UNDP Gender Team; and Gail Karlsson, Senior Policy Advisor, ENERGIA International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy.

Guest Article #55: Turning Wastes into Resources While Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Contribution to a Green Economy [viewed]

Environmentally sound management of wastes – including hazardous wastes – is not among the measures that spontaneously come to mind in the context of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Basel Convention - the sole global treaty on waste management, aiming to protect human health and the environment through control of transboundary movements and environmentally sound management of hazardous and other wastes – is not widely seen as an instrument towards this end. If at all, the role of waste management in combating climate change is seen primarily in the reduction of methane emissions resulting from landfills. Hazardous wastes rarely enter the picture.

Event: 73rd Session of UNECE Inland Transport Committee [viewed]

The session will gather high-level officials from the 56 UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) member States, the European Commission, international and European transport organizations and non-governmental organizations. One of the issues to be discussed at the meeting is climate change and transport, including the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable transport systems and the establishment of a new group of experts on the impacts of climate change on international transport networks.
