WCDRR PrepCom1 Identifies Priorities for Post-2015 DRR Framework [viewed]

UNISDR15 July 2014: The First Session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom1) of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) met to review the organizational and substantive preparations for the Conference, approve its programme of work, and propose its rules of procedure. Over 600 government representatives and experts attended the conference, with broadly converging views on how to address threats posed by disasters and climate change.

ITPGR Secretariat Issues Publication on Farmers and Climate Change [viewed]

Event: UN Summit for Adoption of Post-2015 Development Agenda [viewed]

The UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda was mandated by the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2013 (Resolution 68/6). In consultations on organizational modalities for the Summit, Member States are considering holding the summit on 21-23 September 2015.

Event: Fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) [viewed]

In recognition of 2014 as the year of agriculture, the fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) will take place under the theme 'Africa Can Feed Africa Now: Translating Climate Knowledge into Action'. This iteration of the conference is exploring how evolving knowledge of climate can create sustainable agricultural production systems in Africa, so that it can feed itself and support the socio-economic development of its people. The impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, such as farmers, women, youth and pastoralists, will be at the center of the discussions. Each year, CCDA brings together stakeholders from civil society, academia, the policy arena and intergovernmental organizations to discuss the interrelationships between climate change and development, with a focus on opportunities, best practices, different approaches, strategies and planning. The event is organized under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, which is a consortium of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Montreal Protocol OWEG 34 Addresses HFCs, MLF Replenishment [viewed]

oewg3421 July 2014: Delegates at the 34th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG 34) of the parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer considered: a progress report of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP); organizational issues related to the TEAP; the report of the TEAP on 2015-2017 Multilateral Fund (MLF) replenishment; nominations for essential-use exemptions and critical-use exemptions; alternatives to ozone depleting substances (ODS); the outcomes of the workshop on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) management; and a proposal for extending an exemption for laboratory and analytical uses.

IRENA Identifies Success Factors for "Renewable Islands" [viewed]

IRENAJuly 2014: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has released a report that demonstrates how deployment of renewable energy on islands can reduce fossil-fuel import dependence and create business and employment opportunities. The report, titled ‘Renewable Islands: Settings for Success,' looks at how islands around the world have attracted investments in cost-effective renewable energy resources.

Event: Social Pre-COP [viewed]

The Social PreCOP will be held from 4-7 November 2014, ahead of UNFCCC COP 20. It will welcome civil society organizations from all over the world, including those attending the UNFCCC negotiations or involved in other UN processes, as well as organizations with no formal UN status. The Social Pre-COP will, inter alia: provide civil society with an opportunity to contribute ideas and proposals for the new climate agreement; ensure that its agenda is aligned with the current themes negotiated under the Convention to enable viable inputs to the formal process; and facilitate regional balance and different perspectives.
