Event: Tenth Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum [viewed]

Organized by the UNFCCC, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Development Programme (UNDP), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank Group (WBG) and partners, the tenth Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) will bring together key players from the private and public sectors to discuss climate change mitigation, and reach out to cooperation agencies, potential investors and service providers. The LACCF will showcase opportunities in line with the Paris Agreement, including: Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) implementation; leveraging public and private finance for climate action; carbon pricing mechanisms and carbon markets; sustainable development and transformational change; public-private partnerships (PPPs); and innovative business models to fight climate change. The Forum will also feature the latest advances and resources on sustainable cities, agroindustry, energy, extractive industries, forests and transport. The LACCF will be held during the 2016 Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week, back-to-back with the Fifth Regional Platform for Low Emission Development Strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean (LEDS LAC) Regional Workshop themed 'Moving Towards a Resilient and Low-Emission Development: Implementing the Paris Agreement'.

Event: 13th Meeting of the Board of the Green Climate Fund [viewed]

The 13th meeting of the Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) will be held from 28-30 June 2016, in Songdo, Republic of Korea. Constituency meetings, as well as meetings of Board committees, panels and groups will take place on 26 June 2016, and informal consultations by Co-Chairs with Board members, alternate members and active observers will take place on 27 June 2016. In accordance with the GCF Information Disclosure Policy, the meeting will be webcast live. Registration of members of the Board, alternate members, their advisers and accredited observer organizations will be open from 9 May to 13 June 2016.

ITU, UNECE Launch United for Smart Sustainable Cities Initiative [viewed]

unece_itu26 May 2016: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have launched a global initiative to advocate for public policy that will promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) as a catalyst for transitioning to "smart sustainable cities." The United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) initiative will help implement Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

EBRD to Dedicate Next 25 Years to Green Economy Transition [viewed]

European Bank17 May 2016: Reflecting on its goals for the next 25 years, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has identified the need to focus on three themes: building the economic resilience of EBRD countries of operation to withstand external shocks; better integrating EBRD countries of operation into regional and the global economy; and helping them combat climate change, food insecurity, and other global challenges.

May 2016 Climate Finance Update: Calls for Adaptation Funding, Attention to Climate Risk [viewed]

may2016_climate_finance31 May 2016: A number of international meetings that convened in May 2016 included a focus on climate finance. Carbon pricing continued to receive attention, alongside climate change planning and financing in Africa. Calls were also made to pay increased attention to the growing 'adaptation finance gap,' and climate and disaster risks, including in investments. A number of resilience projects received funding, and development banks and climate funds organized readiness workshops.

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: Bonn Talks Focus on Adaptation Planning, Reporting, Implementation, Support [viewed]

who_wmo_ecosoc_fao31 May 2016: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and accompanying targets, has made it clear that climate change and sustainable development are inextricably linked. May 2016 news relating to adaptation and loss and damage brought out some of those interlinkages with particular prominence. Not only do events, publications and initiatives reported here contribute to the implementation of SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) generally, they also help implement a range of other SDGs and related targets.

Africa Forum Makes Recommendation for HLPF, Regional Follow-up [viewed]

UNECA27 May 2016: Inclusion should be the lens for ensuring integrated approaches to the implementation, follow-up and review of Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, according to participants at the Second Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD). ARFSD 2 convened in advance of the 2016 session of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), as part of a series of regional preparatory processes to identify regional sustainable development priorities and generate recommendations to strengthen the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Bonn Climate Change Conference Kick-Starts Technical Work [viewed]

sb44_iisdrs26 May 2016: Taking place in the shadow of the historic Paris Conference, the Bonn Climate Change Conference of the UNFCCC was a low-profile meeting. It nevertheless had an ambitious agenda. It included the 44th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 44) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 44), and the first meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1), the body created in Paris to prepare for the entry into force of the Agreement. The SBI and SBSTA were expected to take up a large list of issues that had been postponed in the run up to Paris, when the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) had taken center stage.

UNEP Identifies Emerging Environmental Issues in 'Frontiers' Report [viewed]

UNEP Frontiers 2016 Report20 May 2016: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) identifies six "emerging issues of environmental concern" in its 2016 Frontiers Report, released to coincide with the second session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2). For each issue, the report provides examples of ways to address it, including through innovating and rethinking policy interventions, devising new solutions and adapting existing practices. UNEA-2 is convening in Nairobi, Kenya, from 23-27 May 2016.

First Great Green Wall Global Conference Reaffirms Commitments to Restore Africa's Drylands [viewed]

GGWSSI13 May 2016: The first Global Conference on the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI) issued the ‘Dakar Declaration,' which aims to reverse land degradation and improve economic opportunities for populations across the Sahel and Sahara belt. Convened from 5-7 May 2016, in Dakar, Senegal, the Conference sought to build on the momentum generated at a High Level Summit on the GGWSSI held on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Conference, where US$4 billion was pledged to step up implementation of the Initiative over the next five years.
