World Bank Links Energy Subsidy Reform to Job Creation in MENA Region [viewed]

World Bank8 October 2014: A study by the World Bank finds evidence of a positive relationship between fuel prices, per capita gross domestic product (GDP) growth and job creation, and encourages the governments of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to cut energy subsidies in order to build dynamic, employment-intensive economies. The study, titled ‘Corrosive Subsidies,' also projects economic growth in the MENA transition countries to be hampered by macroeconomic imbalances and unfinished subsidy reform.

UNFCCC Draws Lessons from Adaptation Planning Processes [viewed]

UNFCCC2 October 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a ‘Synthesis report on methods and tools for, and good practices and lessons learned relating to, adaptation planning processes addressing ecosystems, human settlements, water resources and health, and good practices and lessons learned related to processes and structures for linking national and local adaptation planning.'

Event: 24th Adaptation Fund Board Meeting [viewed]

The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) will hold its 24th meeting to hear reports from the Chair, the secretariat, the Accreditation Panel, the Project and Programme Review Committee (PPRC), and the Ethics and Finance Committee (EFC). The Board will also take up items remaining from its 23rd meeting, including: a strategic discussion of objectives and steps for the Fund; report from the fundraising task force; implementation of the readiness programme; and the second review of the Fund. Other agenda items include: communication and outreach; financial issues with regard to the Trust Fund, certified emission reduction (CER) monetization and project/programme pipeline; issues related to regional projects/programmes; dialogue with civil society organizations (CSOs); and election of the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the Board, PPRC, EFC and Accreditation Panel.

ADP Co-Chairs Outline Scenario for October Session [viewed]

UNFCCC8 October 2014: The Co-Chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) have issued a scenario note on the sixth part of the ADP's second session (ADP 2-6). The document (ADP.2014.9.InformalNote) presents the Co-Chairs' proposals on how to carry out the work of ADP 2-6 and aims to assist parties in their preparations for the upcoming session.

ILO's World Day for Decent Work Focuses on Climate Change [viewed]

Ilo7 October 2014: In a blog post published by the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General, highlights that trade unions chose climate change as the theme for the 2014 World Day for Decent Work, celebrated on 7 October 2014. Ryder elaborates on the links between sustainability and prosperity, quoting the union slogan that quipped, "there are no jobs on a dead planet" and "business cannot succeed on a planet that fails."

SPREP Launches Support Mechanism for Climate Resilience [viewed]
