ECOSOC1 April 2015: The 2015 Integration Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) addressed the theme of 'Achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all.' Bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors, in dialogue with UN Member States and civil society representatives, the Segment examined policy recommendations for decent work and employment, and how these issues fit in with ongoing discussions on the post-2015 development agenda and other UN processes.

African Finance Ministers Address FfD, Data Revolution, Climate Change [viewed]

UNECA AU31 March 2015: The Eighth Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union (AU) Specialised Technical Committee of Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration, and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development agreed on a ministerial statement that addresses progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and support for the post-2015 development agenda, financing for development (FfD), the data revolution and climate change, among other issues. The meeting convened under the theme, ‘Implementing Agenda 2063: Planning, Mobilizing and Financing for Development.'

UNEP Global Trends Report: New Solar and Wind Installations Hit Record High in 2014 [viewed]

UNEP31 March 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the 9th iteration of its 'Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment' (GTR), reporting that 2014 saw a 17% increase in renewable energy investments over 2013. GTR 2015 also finds that 2014 was the best year on record for newly installed renewables capacity at 103 gigawatts (GW), an amount equivalent to the total capacity of the US's 158 nuclear power plant reactors.

In addition, the multilateral development banks (MDBs) and World Bank released publications related to sustainable energy finance, and EBRD and the World Bank hosted energy efficiency and renewable energy events.

ECO Countries Resolve to Communicate INDCs [viewed]

eco27 March 2015: The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Ministerial Conference on Climate Change, which convened in Safranbolu, Turkey, concluded with the adoption of the 'Safranbolu Declaration on Enhancing Regional pre-COP 21 Ambition on Climate Change,' including a resolution from its ten member States to deliver their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) towards a “fair, flexible, durable and inclusive legally-binding post-2020 climate agreement” at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France, in December 2015.

European Council Addresses Next Steps for Energy Union [viewed]

European Council19 March 2015: The European Council has confirmed its commitment to the EU's Energy Union at a meeting focused on designing the first steps toward the Union. The Council released its 'Conclusions on the Energy Union,' which call for concrete actions to support the Union and a forward-looking climate policy. The Conclusions also call for coordinated climate diplomacy ahead of the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015 and intensified work on financing, technology transfer and capacity building.

Event: Climate Finance Day 2015 [viewed]

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Caisse des Dépôts are organizing this event to give private financial operators an opportunity to reflect on "how to shift the trillions" of dollars needed toward the goal of limiting average global temperature rise to below 2°C. The banking and financial sector will share solutions for reducing financing for a high carbon economy, engage in debates on green investment, highlight successful policies that lower risks and open up opportunities, and showcase its commitment to combating climate change.

Event: Scaling Up Finance for Climate Action: A Public-Private Dialogue [viewed]

This event will focus on what it will take to close the climate finance gap in the lead-up to the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC. World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and European Investment Bank (EIB) President Werner Hoyer will lead the discussion with policy makers, international financial institutions (IFIs), civil society and the private sector, focusing on ways to deliver the funds needed to transition to a low-carbon, resilient economy. Other speakers will include Rachel Kyte, World Bank Group Vice President and Climate Change Special Envoy, and Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs.
