August 2008: An opinion brief authored by Madeleen Helmer,
Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre, Sarah La Trobe, Tearfund, and Silvia
Llosa, UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Secretariat, notes that
the humanitarian community has not engaged in climate debates, particularly
since attention focused on addressing the causes of climate change.
1 August 2008: The fifty-fourth Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and associated events is taking
place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 1-10 August 2008. On 8 August, a workshop
on collaboration among Large and Small States through International
Organizations to Respond to Climate Change will be held to examine the
Commonwealth Climate Action Plan, which was adopted on 24 November 2007 in
Kampala, Uganda at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
31 July 2008: The fifteenth Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned
Movement (NAM), held from 27-30 July 2008 in Tehran, Iran, concluded with the
adoption of a document in which
Ministers recognize that climate change poses serious risks and challenges,
particularly to developing countries, and call for urgent global action in
accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.
4 August 2008: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecom Asia 2008 will be held from
2-5 September, 2008 in Bangkok Thailand. The event is being
organized on the theme “New Generation New Values,” by ITU Telecom, a part of
the ITU. The event will comprise an exhibition and a forum, and aims to provide
a platform for the information and communications technology (ICT) community to
explore the growth and investment opportunities available in the Asia Pacific
ICT sector.
31 July 2008: On his three-country tour of Latin America,
Srgjan Kerim, President of the UN General Assembly, has discussed climate
change with Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile, and addressed its importance
at a conference on the role of the UN in a globalized world.
29 July 2008: In a message to the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned
Movement in Tehran, Iran, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged a successful
conclusion to climate talks in Copenhagen in 2009, noting that progress towards
the Millennium Development Goals and ensuring food security have been severely
undermined by the climate crisis.
30 July 2008: The President of the UN General Assembly issued a draft outcome
document for the Monterrey Consensus Review Conference where countries would
recognize that responses to the climate change problem have “major development
implications” and “commit to respond to the additional financial requirements
that meet these new challenges with appropriate, concrete international
cooperation measures and policies.” The Review Conference, to be held in Doha,
Qatar, from November 29 to 2 December 2008, would also highlight that efforts
to address climate change should “promote increased trade in environmental
goods and not result in environmentally-based trade distortions.”
25 July 2008: At the conclusion of the first South Africa-EU Summit, held in Bordeaux, France,
participants adopted a Declaration on Climate Change in which they agreed on the
need to conclude
negotiations by the end of 2009 on a strengthened and effective global
agreement for the climate change regime post 2012.
24 July 2008: The Draft Declaration of Commitment for the Fifth Summit of the Americas was presented during a meeting of National Coordinators of the Summit Implementation Review Group held at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC, US.

2008: The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and IUCN
have published a report entitled “Agricultural Ecosystems, Facts and Trends.”
The Report presents facts and figures on trends in agricultural production and
consumption to help governments, farmers, consumers and industry better
understand the challenges facing the sustainable management of agricultural
ecosystems, such as meeting demands from a fast-growing world population,
adapting to climate change impacts, and managing the natural resources of an
increasingly depleted planet.
