17 February 2009: At the opening of the 25th Session of the Governing Council of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which will run from 16-20 February 2009, at UN headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya called on world leaders to support a “Green New Deal” to address climate change and revitalize the global economy.
13 February 2009: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has submitted to the fifth Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 5) a proposal stressing the need to include in the UNFCCC negotiation agenda practical approaches, such as biochar-related (charcoal) mitigation, focusing on increased land productivity.
13 February 2009: The report of the 45th meeting of the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM-EB-45), which convened from 11-13 February 2009, in Bonn, Germany, has been released.
February 2009: The World Bank will hold its Energy Week 2009 from 31 March-2 April 2009, at its headquarters in Washington DC, US. The event will gather policy-makers and practitioners engaged in energy and development. It will comprise a three-day executive conference where energy challenges facing today's world will be analyzed, including topics such as: energy innovations for clean transport; securing a climate sensitive energy supply; integrating wind energy development; and scaling up energy efficiency for climate change mitigation.

February 2009: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is co-organizing a conference on “Implementation of Renewable Energy in the Emerging Markets of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean 2009 (REEM09),” which is scheduled to take place from 27-29 April 2009, in San Francisco, US.
February 2009: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Forum will take place in Paris, France, on 23-24 June 2009, in conjunction with the annual OECD ministerial summit, which will be chaired by the Republic of Korea's Prime Minister HAN, Seung-soo.
February 2009: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is planning three events in 2009 related to clean energy and climate: a Climate and Clean Energy Week on 15-19 June 2009; a High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific on 16-17 June; and the Fourth Asia Clean Energy Forum 2009 on 17-19 June.
10 February 2009: In a press conference given at UN Headquarters in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon provided an overview of his recent travels. He recalled that in Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum, he spoke on climate change and stressed the need for “global leadership of the highest order” to complete the negotiations in December in Copenhagen. He also mentioned that in Delhi, India, at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, he argued for “green growth” or a Green New Deal that stimulates economic growth and fights climate change by investing in renewable energy. He indicated that he would carry this theme forward at the upcoming G-20 summit meeting in London, UK, on 2 April.
10 February 2009: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has launched Project Transitions, a multi-stakeholder, multi-output research programme, to determine effective policy responses to the issue of the useful life of energy infrastructure and its related greenhouse gas emissions through micro-scale analysis from an investor's perspective.
