UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Information Note on AWG-KP 11 and AWG-LCA 9 [viewed]

24 February 2010: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a note informing parties, observer States and observer organizations that the 11th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 11) and the ninth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 9) will take place from 9-11 April 2010, in Bonn, Germany.

Event: First PrepCom for UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) [viewed]

The UN General Assembly, in December 2009, adopted a resolution calling for a UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) to be convened in Brazil in 2012 (also referred to as Rio+20). The resolution established the dates for the preparatory committees leading to the event, and indicates the event should be focused on: a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and the institutional framework for sustainable development.

CSD-18 SIDS Day will serve as a PrepCom for the High-level Review of the Mauritius Strategy for the Implementation (MSI) of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which is scheduled to take place in September 2010.

African Ministers Welcome Calls for New and Innovative Resources for Climate Change [viewed]

21 February 2010:  A meeting of the Committee of African Ministers of Finance and Planning and Governors of Central Banks (Committee of Ten) recognized the importance of pursuing a low-carbon growth path, but emphasized that the additional costs to achieve it should not be at the expense of existing under-resourced development needs.

UNEP Information Note Urges More Ambitious Pledges to Keep Temperatures Below 2ºC by Mid-Century [viewed]

23 February 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a new greenhouse gas (GHG) modeling study it compiled, based on the estimates of researchers at nine leading centres. The study concludes that countries will have to make more ambitious GHG emission reduction pledges if global temperature rise is to be curbed at 2ºC or less.

UN Secretary-General to the Unity Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean: “Climate Change Remains a Clear and Present Danger” [viewed]

22 February 2010: At the Unity Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean, which convened in Cancun, Mexico, Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), delivered a message on behalf of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noting that climate change is a “major inter-connected challenge.”

Event: High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development [viewed]

This year's Dialogue will focus on the overall theme “The Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration on Financing for Development: status of implementation and tasks ahead.” The first day of the Dialogue will consist of plenary meetings chaired by the President of the UN General Assembly, and the second day will be devoted to three interactive multi-stakeholder round tables followed by an informal interactive dialogue with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. The Dialogue will result in a summary by the President of the General Assembly.
