Event: Major Economies Forum: Brussels April 2011 [viewed]

The Brussels meeting of the Major Economies Forum (MEF) is co-hosted by Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, and Michael Froman, US Deputy National Security Adviser for international economic affairs. This is the first MEF session since the Cancún Climate Change Conference. The agenda includes implementation of the Cancún Agreements, climate finance, the legal form of a future global climate framework, the Kyoto Protocol, and goals for the Durban Climate Change Conference.

Event: Stakeholder Meeting to Develop an Action Plan on Forests and the Green Economy [viewed]

The Forestry and Timber Section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is organizing a meeting with stakeholders across the UNECE region (Western and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North America) to discuss the development of an action plan on forests and the green economy. Discussion will focus on: Sustainable Wood Consumption and Production; Low-carbon Forest Sector; Valuation of and Payments for Ecosystem Services; Monitoring and Governance; and Green Jobs. The action plan, once finalized, will be reviewed by the UNECE Timber Committee and FAO European Forestry Commission at their joint session, scheduled from 10-14 October 2011 in Antalya, Turkey. It will then be presented as a regional sectoral example at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in June 2012.

World Bank Study Highlights Growth Potential for China's Electric Vehicles Industry [viewed]

20 April 2011: A new World Bank study, titled "The China New Energy Vehicles Program: Challenges and Opportunities," estimates that the growth of electric vehicles over the next 10 years is expected to be significant, with industry forecasts suggesting that global plug-in vehicle sales will contribute between 2-25% of new vehicle sales by 2025.

Multilateral Fund Approves Funding for HCFC Phase-Out in 39 Countries [viewed]

15 April 2011: The Executive Committee (ExCom) of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) convened for its 63rd meeting in Montreal, Canada, from 4-8 April 2011. The meeting committed over US$40 million to phase-out approximately 400 tons of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in 39 developing countries.

Hungary Donates Funds for Fast-Start Climate Finance [viewed]

15 April 2011: Hungary has announced it will donate one million Euro to the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) operating under the UNFCCC and managed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), thus becoming one of the first donors in Central Europe to invest in climate adaptation for least developed countries (LDCs), which are most vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change.

UNFCCC Publishes Further Documents for Bonn Session [viewed]

19 April 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published additional documents in preparation for the 34th session the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), which will take place in Bonn, Germany, from 6-16 June 2011, in conjunction with the 34th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), as well as sessions of the Ad Hoc Working Groups.
