UNECA Highlights Blue Economy Potential of African SIDS [viewed]

UNECA28 August 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Climate Policy Center (ACPC) have released a report, titled ‘Climate Change in the African SIDS: The Paradox of the Small.' The report highlights that the blue economy can help African small island developing States (SIDS) to achieve their development aims and tackle challenges related to economic and climate change vulnerability. UNECA will launch the report during a side event to the Third International Conference on SIDS.

IEA Releases Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report [viewed]

IEA28 August 2014: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has launched its 'Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2014,' which finds that policy uncertainty could slow renewable energy expansion over the next five years. While the report projects renewable generation will grow by 45%, and will make up almost 26% of total global electricity generation by 2020, deployment of new renewable power capacity is expected to slow and stabilize after 2014.

UNFCCC, ILO Strengthen Collaboration on Climate, Green Economy [viewed]

unfccc-ilo27 August 2014: Guy Rider, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), have released a joint statement highlighting the socioeconomic benefits of a transition to a green economy, including social inclusion, poverty alleviation and better jobs. According to the statement, shifting to a green economy could generate an additional 60 million jobs over the next 20 years.

ADB Assesses Climate Change Costs in South Asia [viewed]

ADB19 August 2014: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has published a report, titled ‘Assessing the Costs of Climate Change and Adaptation in South Asia,' which predicts that by 2050, the collective economy of six countries - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka - will see an average annual economic loss of around 1.8% of GDP by 2050 that could rise to 8.8% in 2100 if the “world continues on its current fossil fuel-intensive path.”
