EC President-Elect Appoints Climate and Energy Commissioner [viewed]

European Union 10 September 2014: President-elect of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has announced the composition and organization of work for the next European Commission. In the new structure, six Vice-Presidents will lead Project Teams and steer and coordinate the work of Commissioners. A Project Team on the ‘Energy Union' will be led by Alenka Bratušek (Slovenia). Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete (Spain) will be in charge of both Climate Action and Energy policy.

GCF Set for Initial Resource Mobilization [viewed]

Green Climate Fund (GCF)9 September 2014: Representatives from over 20 governments met in Bonn, Germany, for the Green Climate Fund's (GCF) second Initial Resource Mobilization (IRM) meeting. Attendees consulted informally on the Fund's initial capitalization in advance of the first formal GCF Pledging Conference, which is scheduled to take place in November, during which contributors are expected to announce initial contributions to the Fund.

ADB Highlights Wind and PV Potential in Developing Asia [viewed]

IRENA8 September 2014: The first edition of a new flagship publication series of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) argues that a new power system that is based on renewable energy would enhance energy access and security, create jobs and safeguard health and the environment globally. Titled ‘REthinking Energy: Towards a New Power System,' the report argues that new approaches to electricity systems planning and market design, policy frameworks and funding, and training and education are required to "take the energy transformation to the next level."

GEF CEO Announces Largest-Ever Financing for SIDS [viewed]

GEF4 September 2014: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Naoko Ishii has announced US$256 million in funding for projects on biodiversity, chemicals and wastes, forests and capacity building. IEA Simulates ETS in Chinese Power Sector [viewed]

IEA2 September 2014: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report, titled ‘Emissions Trading in the People's Republic of China: A Simulation for the Power Sector,' which presents the results of a simulated Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) for the Chinese power sector that the IEA developed and ran in collaboration with the China Electricity Council (CEC), the China Beijing Environment Exchange (CBEEX) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to prepare to “gradually develop a carbon trading market” in accordance with China's 12th five-year plan (2011-2015).
