25 April 2013: The World Bank, through the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), has approved a US$15 million grant to help Mozambique strengthen its hydrological and meteorological information services across national, provincial and local communities, with the aim of building a climate-resilient society.
30 April 2013: At the first consultative workshop on Development, Transfer and Dissemination of Clean and Environmentally Sound Technologies in Developing Countries, panelists and participants addressed science and technology needs and options for poverty eradication and sustainable development, with a focus on the cases of agriculture and energy.
30 April 2013: The World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) is calling for public comments on its report, titled “Background for a Framework of Ethical Principles and Responsibilities for Climate Change Policies.” COMSET is an advisory body of independent experts for the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
26 April 2013: The Commonwealth Secretariat hosted representatives of very small States in a meeting on the specific challenges that micro-States face in delivering sustainable development. Discussions focused on governance, policy and public administration in micro-States.
The Eighth International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Symposium on Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), the Environment and Climate Change will convene from 6-7 May 2013 in Turin, Italy. The symposium's theme is “Smart Sustainable Cities” and will bring together experts to discuss the latest initiatives in the development of smart cities, with a view to determining the best path forward in leveraging ICTs to enhance cities' environmental sustainability. Agenda items include: energy efficiency, clean power and the smart grid as engines for sustainable urban growth; integrated ICT solutions for smart sustainable cities and empowered citizens; ICTs and climate monitoring; and climate change adaptation and emergency telecommunications in urban areas. The symposium is organized by ITU in partnership with the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, will be hosted by Telecom Italia at its innovation center. This symposium will be held in conjunction with the first meeting of the new Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities, on 8 May, and a Workshop on Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields, on 9 May.
29 April 2013: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has issued a report, titled “Adaptation in Europe: Addressing Risks and Opportunities From Climate Change in the Context of Socio-Economic Development.” The report aims to provide policy makers at all levels of government with the information required to undertake adaptation planning and implementation.
30 April 2013: A recent publication by a group of research institutions, including Bioversity International, documents the results of multi-site trials on pine species that aim to better understand options for choosing optimal species for forestry in the face of climate change.
26 April 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and World Bank highlighted a case study on financing water and sanitation in Seychelles, funded through debt financing by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), as well as grants from the European Development Fund and the African Water Facility (AWF).
April 2013: The “Asia and the Pacific Parliamentarian and Civil Society Organization (CSO) Forum on Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Acceleration and the Post-2015 Development Agenda” resulted in a Bali Declaration on accelerating the MDGs and the post-2015 development agenda. It asserts that the post-2015 framework should be based on: human rights, democracy and good governance; equality and non-discrimination; sustainable development; and quality public service delivery.
The Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (Comité permanent Inter-Etats de Lutte contre la Sécheresse dans le Sahel; CILSS in French) was created in 1973, after the devastating droughts that hit the region. CILSS currently has 13 member States: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Bissau Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
