UNDP Ecosystem-based Adaptation Event Discusses Links to Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

UNDP9 October 2014: A UN Development Programme (UNDP) event examined how ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) can contribute to the post-2015 development agenda. The event, which gathered representatives from government, multilateral institutions and NGOs, concluded that a climate-resilient future will not be possible without a strong emphasis on EbA, and that EbA can also contribute to sustainable development more broadly.

'Toward 2015' Co-Chairs Release Report [viewed]

Human Rights Experts Publish an Open Letter to UNFCCC State Parties [viewed]

OHCHR 221 October 2014: A group of independent experts of the Human Rights Council of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has published an open letter, titled ‘A New Climate Change Agreement Must Include Human Rights Protections for All.' The letter urges State Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to recognize the adverse impacts of climate change on the enjoyment of human rights and to adopt urgent and ambitious measures to prevent further harm.

Climate Field School Increases Agricultural Productivity, Food Security [viewed]

WMO21 October 2014: The Climate Field School, organized by the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) with the Agriculture Agency of Banten Province in the village of Gempolsari, convened for a three-month session from 14 July to 3 October 2014, during which farmers reported a 25% increase in corn harvests.

Structured Expert Dialogue Assesses Adequacy of Long-Term Global Goal [viewed]

UNFCCC16 October 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a summary report of the third meeting of the structured expert dialogue (SED 3), which aimed to contribute to assessing the adequacy of the long-term global goal and overall progress towards achieving it based on the contributions of Working Groups II (WGII) and III (WGIII) to the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). During SED 3, IPCC experts presented findings from AR5 WGII and WGIII and highlighted their relevance to both themes of the 2013–2015 review, which was followed by a moderated discussion.

Transboundary Basins Workshop Focuses on Adaptation to Climate Change [viewed]

UNECE15 October 2014: The Fifth Workshop on Water and Adaptation to Climate Change in Transboundary Basins focused on developing and implementing climate change adaptation strategies and measures, taking into account specific outcomes at the transboundary level. The workshop brought together experts working on adaptation to climate variability and change, with a focus on transboundary basins, and was preceded by the 7th meeting of the Task Force on Water and Climate on 13 October. It was convened under the leadership of the Governments of the Netherlands and Switzerland, with support from the Secretariat of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

ADB Workshop Examines Climate Change Implications in Mekong Region [viewed]

ADB-Greater Mekong10 October 2014: Following a workshop that examined 'Mekong Protected Areas and Climate Change – Implications for Livelihoods and Development,' over 60 participants from the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) are returning home to implement country action plans based on the best practices, tools and adaptation strategies learned at the workshop. The results of the workshop will also inform the 'Protected Areas, Development, and Climate Change in the GMS (PAD2)' project, set to commence in 2015.

Event: INDM, IGO, IACNDR [viewed]

The Third Hemispheric Encounter of the Inter-American Network for Disaster Mitigation (INDM) will consider the theme 'Integrating Disaster Risk Management and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Development Agenda'. A meeting of the Inter-American Committee on Natural Disaster Reduction (IACNRD) will take place in parallel on 25 November, followed on 26 November by a Meeting of the Subregional Specialized Inter-governmental Organizations (IGO) on Disaster Risk Management that also serve as the Regional Focal Points for INDM, namely the Central American Integration System's (SICA) Center for the Prevention of Natural Disasters in Central America (CEPREDENAC), CARICOM's Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), and the Andean Community's Committee for the Prevention and Attention to Disasters (CAPRADE). These meetings will: share experiences and good practices on the basis of the findings and results of studies undertaken in Central America, the Caribbean and Andean region so as to inform public policy to improve national disaster risk management systems; reactivate the ICDM and IACNRD; discuss a strategic plan for the next three to five years; and increase collaboration and coordination between the OAS, sub-regional IGO and UN agencies, particularly the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (ISDR), regarding disaster risk management.
