ADB Assesses Climate Change Costs in South Asia [viewed]

ADB19 August 2014: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has published a report, titled ‘Assessing the Costs of Climate Change and Adaptation in South Asia,' which predicts that by 2050, the collective economy of six countries - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka - will see an average annual economic loss of around 1.8% of GDP by 2050 that could rise to 8.8% in 2100 if the “world continues on its current fossil fuel-intensive path.”

DESA Analyzes SIDS Sustainable Development Trends [viewed]

DESAAugust 2014: Despite advances toward sustainable development, small island developing States (SIDS) continue to face many challenges, according to ‘Trends in Sustainable Development: SIDS,' a publication issued by the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Division for Sustainable Development (DSD) as an input to the Third International Conference on SIDS. The report assesses SIDS' progress in key sustainable development areas: climate change; demographics; energy; finance and trade; health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs); natural disaster management; oceans and seas; social development, including education, food security, gender equality and access to water and sanitation; tourism; and waste management.

Event: International Conference on Mountain People Adapting to Change [viewed]

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is organizing an international conference on 'Mountain People Adapting to Change: Solutions Beyond Boundaries Bridging Science, Policy, and Practice'. Noting that the rapid environmental change in the Hindu Kush Himalayas has outpaced adaptation techniques, the organizers aim to fill gaps in knowledge about local trends and global climate change and develop solutions that "look beyond political, sectoral and national boundaries". Over 200 experts and stakeholders are anticipated to convene at the conference, which is expected to produce valuable insights for mountainous regions beyond the Hindu Kush Himalayas. The primary objectives of the conference are "share evidence-based scientific knowledge; boost awareness and engagement; and foster partnerships for action".

These resources highlight SIDS' characteristics, show IFAD's strategic approaches to SIDS engagement, and propose moving towards “a global response to island voices for food security.”
