ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment Highlights Synergies between Climate Change and Humanitarian Communities [viewed]
July 2008: The UN Economic and Social Council's (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs
Segment opened on 15 July 2008, and organized its discussions around the theme
“Building capabilities and capacities at all levels for timely humanitarian
assistance, including disaster risk reduction.” Council Vice-President and Segment President Park
In-Kook (Republic of Korea) opened discussions by noting that this year's
Segment provided the international humanitarian community with an opportunity
to reflect on how to respond to the food crisis and the humanitarian
implications of disasters.
11 July 2008: In a speech delivered during the conference
Union (EU) and its Overseas Entities: Strategies to Counter Climate Change and
Biodiversity Loss,” which was hosted on Reunion Island,
Mauritius, from 7-11 July 2008, under the auspices of the French Presidency of
the Council of the EU, Michel Jarraud,
Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), provided
an overview of the Organization's history and work in tackling climate change.
OCHA-UN/ISDR: Disaster Preparedness for Effective Response – Guidance and Indicator Package for Implementing Priority Five of the Hyogo Framework [viewed]
July 2008. The UN Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has launched, in collaboration with
the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) Secretariat, a
document for the implementation of Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) Priority Five
(disaster preparedness for effective response at all levels).
11 July 2008: Delegates to the Southern Cone Regional Workshop on Sustainable
Energy, which took place on 11 July 2008, in Santiago, Chile, identified
ensuring equal access to energy sources, diversifying the energy matrix, and
advancing towards regional energy alliances as some of the region's key priorities.
14 July 2008: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has named Rajendra
K. Pachauri, the head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as one
of its Goodwill Ambassadors.
Regional Symposium on Climate Change, Food Security, Sea Level Rise and Environment in South Asia to Convene in Dhaka, Bangladesh [viewed]
July 2008: The Ohio State University, the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Regional Office for
Asia and the Pacific, and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and
Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with a number of agencies, are organizing the
Regional Symposium on Climate Change, Food Security, Sea Level Rise and
Environment in South Asia in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 25-29 August 2008.
July 2008: The Sixth Summit of the Group of Eight Developing Islamic Countries
(D8), (7-8 July 2008, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) concluded
with the adoption of the “Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Meeting Global Challenges
through Innovative Cooperation,” which recognizes that the food and energy
crises pose a serious threat to socio-economic stability.
June 2008: The Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO),
during its annual session held in Geneva from 18-27 June 2008, agreed on ways
of improving climate, weather, water and environmental predictions and further
advancing global observing systems.
26 June 2008: During its sixtieth Session, which took
place from 18-27 June 2008, the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO)
Executive Council conferred the fifty-third IMO Prize, the Organization's most
prestigious award, to Qin Dahe (China) for his scientific research and for
promoting international cooperation in meteorology.
