UNITAR and UNEP Collaborate on Climate Change Capacity Building [viewed]

© UNITAR6 April 2009: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) have entered into a collaborative effort to help build capacity for climate change adaptation. Under the partnership, UNEP's Division of Early Warning and Assessment will develop a joint module, based on the training resources developed under the UNITAR's Climate Change Capacity Development project. The new module will then be included in UNEP's Integrated Environmental Assessment (IEA) training manual.

The meeting was a follow-up action to the Third Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which called on the UN/ISDR Asia Pacific Office, in consultation with the Asian Partnership on Disaster Reduction (IAP), to develop an Action Plan to the Kuala Lumpur Declaration.

UNFCCC Bonn Talks Conclude [viewed]

© Chair Zammit Cutajar gavels the meeting to a close8 April 2009: The fifth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 5) and the seventh session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 7) concluded on 8 April 2009, in Bonn, Germany. Among other decisions, parties decided to convene two additional meetings in 2009 and they mandated the new AWG-KP Chair John Ashe (Antigua and Barbuda) to prepare a proposal for amendments to the Kyoto Protocol under Article 3.9 (Annex I further commitments) and a text on other issues, such as LULUCF and the flexibility mechanisms.

UNEP Warns of Collapse of Antarctic Ice Bridge [viewed]

UN PFII to Consider Climate Change Policies' Compliance with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples' Standards [viewed]

© UN PFIIApril 2009: The seventh session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UN PFII), which took place from 21 April-2 May 2008, on the theme of “Climate change, biocultural diversity and livelihoods: the stewardship role report of indigenous peoples and new challenges,” recommended the preparation of a report on whether climate change policies and projects adhere to the standards set forth in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The nominated UN PFII special rapporteurs, Hassan Id Balkassm and Paimaneh Hasteh, have prepared a concept note for this study, which seeks to capture the concerns expressed by indigenous peoples at being excluded from the development of national policies and programmes on climate change and from participating in the international dialogue under the UNFCCC (E/C.19/2009/5). The concept note, which recommends a set of issues to be addressed in the report, will be considered by the eighth session of the UN PFII to be held at UN Headquarters, New York, US, from 18-29 May 2009.

Adaptation Fund Board Agrees on Operational Policies and Guidelines for Parties to Access Resources [viewed]

3 April 2009: The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) convened for its fifth meeting from 24-27 March 2009, in Bonn, Germany, during which Jan Cedergren (Sweden) was elected Chair and Farrukh Iqbal Khan (Pakistan) was elected Vice-Chair. The Board also considered a number of issues to ensure that the Fund can start processing, and subsequently fund, adaptation projects and programmes.

UN-HABITAT Governing Council Adopts Resolution on Cities and Climate Change [viewed]

The Governing Council adopted a resolution on cities and climate change and requested the UN General Assembly to convene a third UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.
