2008: Opening the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) discussion on ‘mainstreaming
a gender perspective into all UN policies and programmes, women and
development, and the advancement of women,' Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on
Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, noted the particular vulnerability of
women to climate change and the food crisis.
23 July 2008: In an editorial published in the Financial Times, Mohamed ElBaradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calls for the creation of an international organization on energy. In the article, which he indicates represents his personal views, ElBaradei describes the current energy crisis, stressing the need for environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels and coordinated action on energy and
related issues, including climate change.
21 July 2008: In a letter to member States, UN General
Assembly President Srgjan Kerim expressed his hope that the Assembly would
adopt a resolution taking a principled stand, demonstrating its relevance, and
sending a strong political message in support of agreeing on a comprehensive
global framework in 2009.
21 July 2008:
The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Climate Neutral Network (CN Net)
announced that two Norwegian music festivals have joined the international
fight against climate change. The two festivals are the first music events to
sign on to CNNet, which aims to federate solutions and actions to realize a
low, even zero pollution, world.
21 July: In a Joint Communiqué adopted during the forty-first Association
of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting, which took place from
20-21 July 2008, in Singapore, Ministers addressed the issues of climate
change, the food and energy crises, and disaster relief.
21 July 2008: UN General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim has
circulated to member States the President's informal summary of the General
Assembly's thematic debate, held on 8 July 2008, on the theme ‘Climate Change
and the Most Vulnerable Countries- the Imperative to Act.'
22 July 2008: The Bureau of the Committee on Science
and Technology (CST) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has
selected the ‘Drylands Science for Development' consortium as its partner to
jointly organize a scientific conference for the CST's 2009 session.
21 July 2008: The UN General Assembly
reconvened, on Monday, 21 July, to conclude the plenary meeting on the global
food and energy crisis that began on 18 July 2008. A number of countries,
including Cape Verde and Syria, stressed the interlinkages between the food,
energy and climate challenges.
21 July 2008: Over 700
experts from 28 nations are gathering at the eighth INTECOL International
Wetlands Conference, which is taking place from 20-25 July 2008, in Cuiaba,
Brazil, to agree on measures to better manage and slow the decline of wetlands
that are among the planet's most threatened ecosystems.

2008: This Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Technical Paper is the sixth paper in the IPCC Technical Paper series and was
produced in response to a proposal by the Secretariat of the World Climate
Programme – Water and the International Steering Committee of the Dialogue on
Water and Climate at the 19th Plenary Session of the IPCC, which took place in
Geneva, Switzerland in April 2002.
