UNEP Executive Director Discusses Global Green Economy [viewed]

© UNEP20 April 2009: Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), discussed the Green Economy in a speech delivered at a university in Tel Aviv, Israel. He addressed the way technological opportunities in resource efficient, low carbon and environmentally-friendly products and processes move from ideas onto commercialization, noting the power of the market as arbiter of what society wants and needs. He stressed the role of government in “shaping and focusing markets” to deliver benefits and long-term goals.

G8 Agriculture Ministers Adopt Declaration on the World Food Emergency [viewed]

UN/ISDR to Explore Gender Aspect of Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

© UN/ISDR17 April 2009: The International Conference on Gender and Disaster Risk Reduction, opening on 20 April 2009, in Beijing, China, will explore how women and men can participate equally in driving early warning systems, risk assessments, preparedness exercises and national and local plans to implement disaster risk reduction policies. According to the UN unit on risk reduction, men and women need to work together as equal partners to protect their communities against disasters, particularly as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of storms, floods and cyclones.
