9 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the provisional annotated agendas for the 30th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) (FCCC/SBSTA/2009/1) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) (FCCC/SBI/2009/1), which will convene from 1-12 June 2009, in Bonn, Germany.
6 March 2009: Speaking at the noon press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York, US, Yvo de Boer reported on his recent meetings with high-level US officials in Washington, DC, US. The Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC said he had been “very encouraged” by his meetings with representatives of both Houses of Congress on the prospects for the passage of climate change legislation, as well as with senior Cabinet members. He pointed to Congress' support to set up a US cap-and-trade scheme and to provide financial support to developing countries to make the transition to a low-carbon pathway.
5 March 2009: Lord Nicholas Stern and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) hosted a seminar on “Development in a More Hostile Climate” during which country-level studies of the economic impact of climate change in Brazil, Mexico and South East Asia were presented.
5 March 2009: The UN World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) Tourism Resilience Committee (TRC) is a platform for information and best practice sharing regarding the current economic downturn and its impact on the tourism sector.
5 March 2009: In preparation for the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on biodiversity and climate change, to be held from 18-22 April 2009, in Helsinki, Finland, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is hosting an internet-based discussion group from 9-20 March 2009.
6 March 2009: Speaking at the annual UN International School's UNIS-UN conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discussed the linkages between food security and climate change. The conference, which gathered students from around the world, convened from 5-6 March 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, under the theme “The Food Crisis: A Global Challenge.”
4 March 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) organized a press conference with high-ranking African women who are attending the 53rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW53), at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The panel called for gender-specific responses, including plans and programmes to address the impacts of the financial, food and climate change crises.
4 March 2009: In his address to the National Climate Change Response Policy Development Summit in South Africa, Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), expressed concern with the slow international response to mitigate climate change. The Summit is taking place from 3-6 March 2009, in Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa.
March 2009: The EU, the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the GERES (Renewable Energies Group, Environment and Solidarities) and other partners, are organizing a regional seminar on the challenge of development in energy-related projects and climate change adaptation strategies in the cold regions of Asia, to be held from 21-24 April 2009, in Leh, India.
March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat is organizing a Technical Workshop on Integrating Practices, Tools and Systems for Climate Risk Assessment and Management and Disaster Risk Reduction Strategies into National Policies and Programmes from 10-12 March 2009, in Havana, Cuba.
