Event: Seminar on environmental migration and climate change [viewed]

This seminar is part of the UNITAR Migration and Development Series. Over 20 million people were displaced by sudden-onset climate-related disasters in 2008 alone. Estimates have suggested that between 25 million to one billion people could move as a result of climate change over the next 40 years, with 200 million being the most widely cited figure. This one-day seminar aims to present a nuanced picture of the interrelation between migratory decisions and environmental degradation, exacerbated through climate change; and bring together the migration, development, climate change and environment perspective. This seminar is designed for the members of Permanent Missions. UN staff and interested representatives of civil society and the private sector.

Event: Ninth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues [viewed]

The ninth session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) will be organized around the theme “Indigenous peoples: development with culture and identity: articles 3 and 32 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.” The Forum is expected to consider the results of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference and the implications for indigenous peoples' local adaptation and mitigation measures.

UN Secretary-General's Report for Rio+20 Preparatory Committee Released [viewed]

1 April 2010: The UN Secretary-General's report on "Progress to date and remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits in the area of sustainable development and analysis of the themes for the Conference" (A/CONF.216/PC/2) has been released in preparation for the 17-19 May 2010 Preparatory Committee for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, which will meet in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, in 2012 (Rio+20).

WMO Addresses Measurement Challenges in Climate Change Monitoring [viewed]

1 April 2010: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Bureau for Weights and Measures organized a workshop on “Measurement Challenges for Global Observation Systems for Climate Change Monitoring — Traceability, Stability and Uncertainty” from 1-3 April 2010, at WMO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The event aimed to explore ways to deliver more accurate and reliable observations of the Earth's climate.

European Commission Adopts Proposal on Global Health [viewed]

31 March 2010: Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, is holding bilateral talks on climate change with developed and developing countries, to follow up on the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. Hedegaard visited the US and Mexico in early March 2010, met with the Chinese delegation in late March in Brussels, Belgium, and will visit Maldives and India in early April.

US and Japan Announce APEC Initiatives [viewed]

29 March 2010: Japan and the US, as hosts of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2010 and 2011 respectively, have announced initiatives they will undertake in their work with the APEC economies, as they seek increased cooperation in the design of a new growth paradigm for the region, to promote balanced, inclusive, environmentally sustainable and knowledge-based growth.

UN to Launch UN Development Assistance Framework in China [viewed]

29 March 2010: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) has announced that the UN, in cooperation with the Government of China, will launch the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for China 2011-2015, on 1 April 2010, in Beijing, China. A key overall focus area is that the Chinese Government and other stakeholders ensure environmental sustainability, address climate change, and promote a green, low carbon economy.
