Kiribati to Purchase Fiji Land as “Climate Change Insurance” [viewed]

15 March 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that the Kiribati Cabinet has recently agreed to purchase land in neighboring Fiji, as “climate change insurance” for its population. The decision comes as Kiribati President Anote Tong renews calls to the international community to address the effects of climate change threatening to submerge many of Kiribati's low-lying atolls.

6th World Water Forum Adopts Marseille Declaration [viewed]

17 March 2012: The 6th World Water Forum, which was organized around the theme “Time for Solutions,” concluded with adoption of the Marseille Ministerial Declaration. Key issues addressed during the Forum included: access to drinking water and sanitation; contributions to a green economy; resilience and adaptation to climate change; and governance and financing.

SPC Assists Tonga in Adapting to Climate Change [viewed]

The project, part of the Pacific Adaptation Strategy Assistance Program (PASAP), aims to assess the vulnerability and adaptation to sea level rise in Lifuka, Tonga.

UNESCO16 March 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural (UNESCO) has announced the launch of the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT), which provides 40-year record of carbon dioxide accumulation in the surface ocean.

IEA Launches Building Energy Efficiency Policies Database, Signs MOU with WBCSD at Workshop [viewed]

16 March 2012: At a workshop co-organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), titled “The Bumpy Road to Effective Implementation of Buildings Energy Efficiency Policies,” Maria van der Hoeven, Executive Director, IEA, called for a global reduction in the amount of energy consumed in buildings in order to strengthen energy security and combat climate change.

UN Secretary-General Presents Summary Report of High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability [viewed]

16 March 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented a summary of the Report of the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability to an informal plenary session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) convened for that purpose. The report, titled “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing,” presents recommendations for eradicating poverty and reducing inequality, while combating climate change.
