8 June 2012: World Oceans Day, celebrated on 8 June 2012, featured a panel discussion to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening for signature of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Day aims to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with oceans.
31 May 2012: At the daily press briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, it was announced that he has made three high-level appointments, for the positions of Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, and Assistant Secretary-General in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).
5 June 2012: Millions of people celebrated World Environment Day (WED) around the theme, “Green Economy: Does it Include You?” highlighting the central role of communities in the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient and socially inclusive green economy. The estimated 9,000 WED activities held worldwide included tree planting and the official launch of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in Brazil.
16 May 2012: The fourth issue of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) Corporate Sustainability Forum Bulletin provide updates on preparations for the Forum, titled "Innovation and Collaboration for the Future We Want." The Forum is expected to include over 100 sessions focused on six themes: Energy and Climate, Water and Ecosystems, Agriculture and Food, Social Development, Urbanization and Cities, and Economics and Finance.
1 June 2012: The 13th meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (Consultative Process, or ICP 13) brought together representatives from governments, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs and academic institutions to examine this year's topic, marine renewable energies (MREs).
29 May 2012: The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has released the annual report of the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), which provides coordinated humanitarian response to countries in crises. The report highlights that climate-related emergencies tops all categories of humanitarian assistance, with $149 million provided in financial assistance.
24 May 2012: The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) Secretariat has begun listing voluntary commitments to deliver concrete results for sustainable development.
17 May 2012: The 2012 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) focused on the theme “Women and Girls in ICT,” in order to promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to accelerate progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) on gender equality.
16 May 2012: Greening the Blue has announced that the UN Headquarters building in New York, the US, is to be powered by renewable energy. The UN has purchased Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), a tradable certificate issued when electricity is generated and delivered to the grid from a qualifying renewable energy source.
14 May 2012: A group of UN independent experts has called on the Group of Eight Industrialized Nations (G8) and EU countries to support a proposal for a global financial transaction tax (FTT). Such a tax would be applied to mitigate the costs of the economic, financial, fuel, climate and food crises, and to protect basic human rights.
